Written by Charlie Beuttel
Head Coach: Jon Holmes
Mascot: Stags
League: Eastern Kansas (Kansas 4A)
2014: 13-0
Location: Shawnee Mission, KS
Overview
Bishop Miege went off on a perfect run in 2014 finishing 13-0 winning the Kansas 4A state title. The Stags ran all over their competition throughout the season and their closest margin of victory in the regular season was 15 points.
Some key games for Bishop Miege in 2015 include traveling to Gardner-Edgerton on Sept. 11 and hosting St. Thomas Aquinas on September 25. The Stags are bringing back 10 senior starters overall so they have experience and talent to make another deep run and fight for their second consecutive state title.
Offense
The Stags have to replace their star quarterback Ryan Willis, who threw for over 3,000 yards and is now attending the University of Kansas. Junior Landry Weber and sophomore Carter Putz are battling to start this year.
The offensive star in 2015 will be running back Dawson Downing. Downing had 1,960 rushing yards and 31 touchdowns in his junior year. The leading returning receiver is 5’11”, 180 pound, senior receiver Jafar Armstrong.
The offensive line will be led by 6’0”, 260 pound, junior Colin Grunhard and 6’3”, 230 pound, senior Mark Golubski. Nolan Gray provides a big target at tight end. The 6’3”, 215 pound, big man had 261 receiving yards and four touchdowns in 2014.
Defense
In 2014, Bishop Miege only gave up on average 12.7 points a game. The defense in 2015 will be full of seniors so there is no reason why the Stags cannot put on another defensive show.
Senior defensive tackles Kaelin Key and Jake Shriver will be the leaders up front. Key had 7.5 sacks in his junior season. Senior Reed Alena will be the leader of the linebackers. Alena had 31 total tackles including six tackles for a loss and one interception. Senior cornerback TJ Goodwin will be the leader of the Stags secondary.
