Most high school football teams would consider a season with just two losses and a state title a successful year. However, Bishop Miege (Kansas City) is not a normal high school football team. The Stags, despite some key injuries, finished 12-2 and destroyed Goddard 69-31 to win their fifth straight Kansas 4A state championship. The good news for Bishop Miege and their fans, most of the state championship team from 2018 is returning this season making for big expectations for a sixth consecutive state championship.

Offense

Junior Timothy Dorsey will be the quarterback called on to lead the powerful Stag offense that averaged over 44 points a game in 2018. There are two star-studded wide receivers for Dorsey to target, senior Daniel Jackson (Minnesota commit), who missed most of 2018, and junior Phillipe Wesley, who had 987 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns last year.

Running back Brison Cobbins is also returning for his senior season. Cobbins has been a beast out of the backfield racking up 3,435 rushing yards and 49 touchdowns in his high school career picking up 1,300 of those yards and 23 of those touchdowns last season. Three other weapons on the Bishop Miege offense includes senior running backs Tyquez Agnew-Whitten and DeAunte Parker and tight end Connor Doble. The offensive line is anchored by senior left tackle Brian Burns (Harvard commit).

Defense

The Stag defense is just as skilled as the offense returning eight starters from last year’s team. The 2018 squad only gave up 15.8 points per game on average. The defensive line is led by two seniors, Mason Weber and Max VanMeter (8 sacks). Senior Mikey Welsh will be the key linebacker this year after finishing second on the team last season in total tackles (82) behind longtime graduated star Dylan Downing. The Bishop Miege secondary is loaded with upperclassmen including seniors Grant Fussell (2 interceptions) and Rishi Rattan (8 interceptions) and juniors Justin Fountain and Jaden Stevenson.

Overview

Bishop Miege has the experience, talent, and firepower to win a sixth straight 4A championship, which would tie the state record held by Hutchinson (2004-09). The only question surrounding this powerhouse team, can they avoid the injury bug?
