It’s playoff in Kansas as 16 teams are battling it out to be named champions in Kansas 5A. In 2014, Bishop Carroll beat St. Thomas Aquinas in the championship game to cap off an undefeated season. This year those two teams have the ability to make a return trip to the championship however there are several other teams that will challenge for 5A crown.
Among the 16 teams there are several stars that are trying to lead their teams to the ultimate prize by winning state. These players include Mill Valley offensive lineman Ben Hecht (North Dakota State) and wide receiver Christian Jegen, St. Thomas Aquinas offensive Tom Killilea and defensive back Chris Schilling, Maize South offensive lineman Jeremy Luck, Kapaun Mt. Carmel quarterback Brock Monty, and Pittsburg linebacker Will Mengarelli.
There are several storylines to follow as the playoffs unfold including if Bishop Carroll can defend their title? Will there be any upsets in the first round? Will St. Thomas Aquinas make a return trip to the championship game?
It will be exciting to see these 16 teams battle it out on Friday for a spot in the quarterfinals. Who will come out as Kansas 5A champion? Only time will tell.
