The Kansas State Wildcats are facing some tough questions entering the 2016 season on and off the field. However, Coach Bill Snyder is returning for at least one more season. Therefore, the recruiting class for 2016 should be similar to classes that the Wildcats have put together in the past, solid and balanced. Kansas State has focused on improving positions along the offensive line and at the skill positions such as quarterback and wide receiver. The Wildcats success on National Signing Day at quarterback will be the focus of this article.
Kansas State coaches identified Fort Osage High School’s Skylar Thompson early in the recruiting process. Thompson’s high school career was an impressive one at Fort Osage. During his senior season, Thompson passed for 2,128 yards and 25 touchdowns, while throwing only three interceptions. Thompson was even more impressive carrying the football; rushing for 1,099 yards and added 21 touchdowns on the ground.
What should excite Kansas State fans concerning football this fall, is the fact that Thompson is already taking classes in Manhattan and should be available for spring practices. The Wildcats’ offense needs a boost going into the 2016 season, and Thompson may be just what the offense needs to produce points. Kansas State suffered numerous injuries at the quarterback position last season. The Wildcats will have Alex Delton, Joe Hubener, and Jesse Ertz all returning for the 2016 season. At this point, it’s safe to say the quarterback position will be up for grabs during the spring and summer practices.
Thompson gives Bill Snyder several options at quarterback. The pieces are in place at some of the skill spots to have a solid season on the offensive side of the ball. Running back Charles Jones was impressive last season rushing for 692 yards and five touchdowns. Kansas State simply needs to find a quarterback that can limit mistakes and get the Wildcats into the end zone.
If his high school performance is any indication, Skylar Thompson may just be what Kansas State fans and Bill Snyder have been looking for. Only time will tell but Thompson getting on campus early, helps him hit the ground running in the race to be the next Wildcats’ quarterback.
