Even in a state where all the high school football talent gets picked over by every other college program in the country, players still get overlooked. The under the radar status of 2024 Florida tailback Travis Kerney is proving fortuitous for one SEC squad.
Applying his trade for Sebring High School (Sebring) last fall, Kerney (5-11.5, 208) covered 809 yards off 131 totes with 11 trips into the end zone. More work was poured into his game during spring training.
“It went well,” Kerney said. “We didn’t have all our pieces, but we made it fit. We made it work. It went well though.”
Kerney continued, “I worked on my speed, vision, and strength, but mostly speed.”
The mix of power and speed has brought six offers Kerney’s way from Eastern Kentucky, Kentucky, South Florida, Georgia State, Howard, and North Carolina A&T.
The Wildcats brought Kerney on campus in April to show him what life in the SEC East is like.
“That was a good visit,” Kerney shared. “I like their coaching staff; it is nice up there. I took a tour of the campus, their weight room, the team room, and I put on the uniform.”
The time in Kentucky’s facilities helped bond player with coaching staff.
“I talked to their offensive coordinator, coach (Liam) Coen,” Kerney stated. “We were talking about life in general, how we’ve been doing, and how I would be a good fit for Kentucky. I talked to coach Jay Boulware too, their running backs coach; I have been talking to him a lot too. We talk a lot; we are very cool.”
With Temple and Louisville looking at the three-star back, more teams will get a chance to see Kerney in person at the Bulls’ mega camp on Thursday.
“I will be at USF’s camp on Thursday,” Kerney said. “I am looking at some more camps this summer.”
Having that connection with Kentucky, the Wildcats are in line to officially host Kerney.
