Defending Louisiana state champs Calvary Baptist (2-2) has not been firing on all cylinders thus far during the 2015 high school football season but found positive traction Friday night against Zachary (3-1) pulling away for a 42-28 win.
The big game on a big national televised stage had a choppy start with big hits leading to injuries and stop in play but once the teams got going the level of talent by both squads on the field shined through. Senior quarterback Jake Bartley completed 8-of-16 passes for 203 yards finding receiver/running back Kyle Jones early to start setting the pace.
Jones opened the game with a 70-yard pass putting instant pressure on Zachary inside the red zone. Zachary would hold, but then quarterback Lindsey Scott would fumble on a big hit giving the ball right back to the Cavaliers. Kordavion Washington took control of the game rushing 29 times for 112 yards with four touchdowns. In the first half he score on runs of 3, 1, and 1 yards.
Zachary quarterback Lindsey Scott played well all night against the Cavs secondary that features three Division-I Class of 2016 verbal commitments. In the first half Scott hit 7-of-12 passes for 72 yards. For the game he scored twice on runs of 1 and 18 yards and threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to Charles Perovea.
The game was flawed by the referees taking center stage with 14 penalties called, six against Zachary for 90 yards and eight against Calvary for 75 yards. The laundry on the field removed explosive plays for both teams with some calls being highly questionable.
Both sides delivered and took big hits against one another. Zachary seemed to take the brunt of the injuries losing multiple players throughout the game.
Calvary Baptist travels to Farmerville next week to play Union Parish while Zachary goes back on the road again to face Dutchtown in Geismar.
