Louisiana: Captain Shreve High School 2015 Football Season Preview
Written by Charlie Beuttel
Head Coach: Bryant Sepulvado
Mascot: Gators
District: 1-5A
2014: 5-6
Location: Shreveport, Louisiana
Overview
It will be an emotional season for Captain Shreve after the unexpected passing of long time Head Coach Richard Lary this summer. Coach Lary complied a 25-38 record as coach of the Gators. This young Gators team will now be under the leadership of former assistant Bryant Sepulvado.
In 2014 Captain Shreve made it to the playoffs for the third time under Coach Lary but suffered a heartbreaking loss to Thibodaux, 56-6, in the first round. The majority of the Gators’ team is sophomores so there may be some growing pains as they go through a tough district.
A key game for Captain Shreve will Sept. 11 when they host Huntington. It will be their first game without Coach Lary on the sidelines so emotions will be running high.
Offense
The Gators scored 17.8 points a game in 2014 however this offense will be more explosive in 2015 as new offensive coordinator Coy Brotherton will bring a spread offense to Captain Shreve.
Senior Luke Leggio is expected to lead this team at quarterback and sling the ball around in the new offense. Leggio is coming off season ending shoulder surgery for the second consecutive year. The only other returning starters on offense are seniors Julian Charles and Tramel Roberson. Roberson is a two-year starter at running back but will also spend some time at wide receiver this season. Julian Charles, (6’3″, 188) is a key leader at both wide receiver and defensive back.
The rest of the offense will be young but will gain significant playing time and experience. Senior Jakiran Louis (6’3″, 230) will be a key contributor on the offensive line.
Defense
Captain Shreve gave up on average 32 points a game and will only bring back two starters from a year ago. Julian Charles was selected second-team All-District at safety in his junior season. The other returning starter is 6-foot senior linebacker Arthur Hicks. These two field generals will lead the other defensive players.
Senior Kevin Stewart (6’3″, 185 pounds) will be a player to watch on the defensive line in 2015. The younger defensive players will profit from all the playing time they will gain in the upcoming season and it will be exciting to watch them grow.
