Shreveport’s C.E. Byrd High School had a down season in 2019 as the Yellow Jackets finished 4-7. The experience lumps taken for the young squad last season will pay off in 2020, as Byrd has a key core of players returning ready to make a deep run in the playoffs. One of the key stars coming off a monstrous junior season ready to lead his team deep into the Louisiana playoffs is linebacker Makarios Brown Jr.

Brown led his squad with 67 total tackles including 13 for a loss with two sacks, two fumble recoveries and one pass break-up. This 6-1, 205-pound, linebacker has great footwork and speed which enables him to make tackles and blow up plays from sideline to sideline. After the season, Brown was named first team All-District.

The Class of 2021 prospect is already drawing interest from several Ivy League and SEC schools. Brown not only stars on the football field but also in the classroom where he has 4.02 GPA.

In an exclusive Recruiting News Guru interview, I sat down with Makarios to discuss his career at Byrd High School and his recruiting process.

Interview

Makarios, what are your thoughts on the 2019 season?

“We could have done a lot better as a team closing games.”

How would you grade your individual performance in your junior season?

“B-plus, because I had a nice season but I can always improve my game.”

What are your strengths on the football field?

“I’m versatile. I can do anything on the field and do it well. I have a great eye for the ball and I can cover sideline to sideline for four quarters.”

What was your most memorable moment in 2019?

“The Byrd and Captain Shreve rivalry game. It stands out every year because the stands are packed.”

Did you receive any individual honors?

“First team All-District.”

Are there any schools showing you interest?

“Cornell, Princeton, Brown University, Harvard, LSU, Louisiana-Monroe, Northwestern, Stephen F. Austin, McNeese State, Mississippi State, and Air Force.”

Have you been to any camps?

“Yes: LSU, Northwestern, Louisiana-Lafayette, East Texas Baptist University, Louisiana-Monroe, and Louisiana Tech camps.”

Which camp was your favorite?

“LSU was my favorite. There was great competition and the coaches made me feel at home. Coach (Ed) Orgeron (head coach) and Coach (Dave) Aranda (former DC) personally introduced themselves to my mom and said they were impressed with my performance.”

What do you like most about playing linebacker?

“I’m able to make a play on the ball at all times and you can’t run away from me… well they can try, but they won’t get far.”

What are you working on the most offseason?

“Increasing my speed and working on footwork.”

Which is your favorite football team?

“The Dallas Cowboys.”

What is your GPA?

“4.02.”

Who has had the biggest impact on your football career?

“My mom, because she supports me through whatever and I want to make her proud. I want to be able to show her more than Shreveport.”

What do you like most about playing at C.E. Byrd High School?

“We have structure at Byrd and a lot of competitive people that will keep you on your toes.”

Thank you for your time and good luck in your senior season.

“Thank you, sir.”
