Geron Hargon is a rising star on the campus of Captain Shreve High School in Shreveport. The 6-3, 225-pound, junior linebacker helped lead his team to 44-22 win in their first game against Green Oaks on Sept. 1 coming up with five total tackles including one for a loss in one half of play in the walkaway victory. His play on the field is drawing interest from a number of colleges including Alabama, Purdue, and Harvard aided by his GPA rising over 4.0.
Hargon is motivated on the field by his faith and knowing that his dad, who passed away in 2017, is always watching down on him. He is two Bible verses that he relies on whenever he needs them, Jeremiah 29:11 and Proverbs 27:17.
In an exclusive Recruiting News Guru interview, I sat down with Geron to discuss his recruiting process and growing career at Captain Shreve.
Interview
What are your thoughts on your individual performance last season?
“I was moved to linebacker early on because of injuries to our linebacker core, and it was my first time playing the position. I had an injury throughout the season that I played through, but I felt like I got a better feel for the position as the season progressed. Overall, I thought I played well but I have a lot to improve on.”
What are your thoughts on your individual performance after one game this season?
“I didn’t play nearly as good as I should have, but it felt good to be back out there. It was hot, but I moved around faster and went through my reads quicker than I did last season.”
What are your thoughts on your team after your first game?
“We won the game, but we did not play as good as we want or need to in order to have the season that we envision. This team is very close, and we have a good bond. The defense is there to pick the offense up and the offense is there to pick defense up. We work well together as a team.
“Our coaches came up with a good game plan in the second half and we executed better. We still have a lot to work on each week, but we are glad to be 1-0 to start off the year.”
What were your stats from Saturday’s game?
“I only played two quarters on Saturday due to cramps and we rested our starters towards the end of the game, but I had five tackles and one tackle for loss. “
Do you have any college offers?
“Not currently, but I am dedicated to doing what it takes and pushing myself to have the opportunity to play somewhere at the next level.”
Are there any colleges showing you interest?
“I have received mail and messages from Ole Miss, Alabama, Mississippi State, Purdue, South Carolina, Louisiana Tech, Princeton, Harvard, Columbia, North Carolina, and Houston.”
Have you been to any camps?
“Yes, I attended camps this summer at Alabama, Ole Miss, SMU, Mississippi State, and Louisiana Tech. I loved getting to see the facilities and being taught by some of the best coaches in college football. “
What are your strengths on the football field?
“I really feel like a leader with my teammates. I like to encourage them throughout the game and lead by example. I am aggressive and love to hit and make plays that cause excitement. I can get after the quarterback and cause disruption in the backfield.”
What game remaining on the schedule are you most looking forward too?
“I look forward to the Westgate game. It will be a challenge and is a game that can really give our team a lot of confidence if we play how we are capable and win. They have a great offense, and we saw that last year when we lost a close game to them.”
What are your goals for the 2018 season?
“I would like to make it to the quarterfinals this season. We have made the playoffs two out of the past four seasons, going back to when Coach Lary was our coach. We want to take that next step at advancing and making a run in the playoffs. I also have a goal of making All-State my junior season.”
Is there a player that you try to model your game after?
“I love watching Devin White play. He is a great leader and makes plays all over the field. “
What is your GPA?
“4.6.”
What is your ACT score?
“20. I scored 20 taking the test in the eighth grade. I am taking it again on Sept. 8t”
Which is your favorite football team?
“My favorite team is LSU. I have been going to games since I was a young kid. There is nothing like Saturday night in Death Valley, and I always love watching the Tigers.”
Who is your favorite football player?
“I have to go with Devin White again. He made the transition from running back to linebacker and has made such an impact. I really try to model my game in a lot of ways after him.”
Who has had the biggest impact on your football career and why?
“My dad has had the biggest impact on my football career. He would always work out with me, take me to any camp, and push me to be my best. He passed away in July 2017. I try to honor him in everything that I do. He was my best friend and my biggest supporter.”
Do you have a favorite quote or Bible verse?
“I have two verses that I look to when I struggle and when I lose hope. They are Proverbs 27:17 where it says, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” This encourages me to be a leader on and off the field and to be someone who people can come to when they need. My other favorite verse is Jeremiah 29:11; “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” I know that the plan that God has is better than mine, and even though I can’t see it now, I have to trust that it will be what is right for me.”
Thank you for your time and good luck this season.
“Thank you, sir.”
