C.E. Byrd Yellow Jackets 49, Parkway Panthers 34
In a record setting performance senior Jalin Thomas put up the third most rushing yards in a single game in Yellow Jackets history by burning Parkway for 342 yards and three touchdowns. Charlie Barham and Sam Miletello combined for four more Byrd touchdowns as the Yellow Jackets solidified their second-place spot in District 1-5A. Overall, the Yellow Jackets had 515 total yards for the game all on the ground and didn’t even attempt one pass the whole night.
In the loss, Parkway was led by senior running EJ Williams who had 211 rushing yards and a touchdown. Junior quarterback Amani Larry had 161 passing yards, 56 rushing yards and two total touchdowns. Florida State commit, Israel Mukuamu caught two touchdown passes, one from Larry and one from his younger brother and backup quarterback, Emmanuel Mukuamu. Unfortunately, the injury bug struck Parkway once again as senior linebacker David Morales, the team’s leading tackler, went down in the third quarter and did not return.
Benton Tigers 34, North DeSoto Griffins 33
In a classic battle between district rivals, the Tigers of Benton squeaked past North DeSoto to remain undefeated and push their record to 7-0. Benton was once again led to victory by the senior duo of quarterback Garrett Hable and running back Jermaine Newton. Hable had two touchdowns through the air and one more on the ground while Newton rushed for 139 yards and two touchdowns. One wide receiver who had a quality game was Legend Dentler who had 50 receiving yards and a touchdown.
North DeSoto suffered through missed extra points and penalties to narrowly miss upsetting Benton. The Griffins scored two touchdowns including a 34-yard run by Aubrey Scott and on a 49-yard pass play from Jaden Procell to Maguire Parker in the last few minutes to come within one point. However, the Griffins couldn’t come up with the onside kick and fell short of victory.
