Benton Tigers 20, Woodlawn Knights 0
The Tigers have a high-power offense but it was the defense that shined brightest at Independence Stadium as Benton remain undefeated locking up a district title by shutting out Woodlawn 20-0. Two Tigers who came up with huge plays on the defensive side of the ball were Brooks Cram and William Cox as they helped stop a Knight team who were averaging 50 points over their last five games.
On offense, Benton was led by senior running back Jermaine Newton who scored two touchdowns. The other touchdown came on a 17-yard pass from quarterback Garrett Hable to Doyle Adams Jr.
Woodlawn has relied on senior Trivensky Mosley all season but couldn’t get anything going on offense. The Knights suffered through penalties and turnovers to finishing their first game of the season without scoring a point. The Knights fall to 6-3 and look to get past this game and finish the regular season with a win before the playoffs start in a couple weeks.
Next week both teams will close out the regular season with Benton traveling to Booker T. Washington and Woodlawn playing on the road at Huntington.
Airline Vikings 36, C.E. Byrd Yellow Jackets 20
For the first time since 2004, Airline was able to prevail over Byrd as the Vikings snapped a 14-game losing streak to the Yellow Jackets. Vikings’ quarterback Jordan Gladney, who was making just his second start, led his team to victory by scoring three total touchdowns by the air and on the ground. The other standout in the game for Airline was running back Cameron “Jo Jo” Davis who had 77 rushing yards and one touchdown.
The Yellow Jackets were led by senior running back Jalin Thomas who had 113 yards of total offense and a touchdown. Another touchdown came on a 56-yard pass from sophomore Cameron Felt to Lawson Jackson. Byrd finish the regular season 5-4 and 3-3 in District 1-5A and will get next week off while preparing for the select Division I playoffs which kickoff on Nov. 10.
Airline improve to 6-3 and 3-2 in district and close out the regular season at Haughton next week. The winner of that game will most likely earn a home playoff game in the first round of the 5A playoffs.
