Evangel Eagles (7-1, 4-0) at Haughton Buccaneers (5-3, 1-3)
In their first season in 5A since 2004, Evangel has taken the district by storm. The Eagles look to remain undefeated in district play when they travel to Haughton to take on the Buccaneers in Week 9.
Evangel is led by junior quarterback Connor Curry who has thrown for 1,094 yards and 13 touchdowns so far this season. Another star for the Eagles is senior running back Jamarquez Mims who has ran for 926 yards and 11 touchdowns in his last season at Evangel.
Haughton is led by senior dual-threat quarterback Darius Brooks. Brooks has thrown for 454 yards and eight touchdowns and has ran for 278 yards and seven more touchdowns. The Buccaneers also have two talented running backs, Kei’Untre Normandin and D’Kovin Ware, who have the ability to make big plays out of the backfield. Ware has 438 rushing yards and five touchdowns while Normandin has 412 yards and four touchdowns.
It will be interesting to see if Evangel can continue their dominance in district or if Haughton can pull off the upset.
Byrd Yellow Jackets (7-1, 3-1) at Airline Vikings (7-1, 3-1)
The teams are tied for second in the district with just Week 10 left in the regular season. The winner of this key game is still in contention for the district crown if everything falls right. Airline is coming off their first loss of the year losing to Evangel, 37-7. Byrd had a non-district game last week against Green Oaks winning easily, 41-12.
Byrd is led by senior dual-threat quarterback Deuce Caston. Caston has thrown for 453 yards and five touchdowns and has run for 239 yards and four more touchdowns. Two other offensive weapons for the Yellow Jackets are running backs Tray Allen and Tysen Hardman. Allen has 753 rushing yards and eight touchdowns and Hardman has 376 yards and six touchdowns.
Airline is led by senior quarterback Thomas McKain and senior running back Shun’cee Thomas. McKain has thrown for 767 yards and eight touchdowns this year and Thomas has run for 822 yards and an incredible 14 touchdowns. Another offensive weapon for the Vikings is junior running back Brian Fielding who has ran for 413 yards and six touchdowns.
Who will survive this battle and remain in contention for the district crown? Only time will tell.
