Warren Easton (New Orleans) had a great season in 2015 as the Eagles finished 12-2 and reached the 4A state semifinals where they fell to eventual champion, Neville, 44-36. The key to the Eagles success this season was their offense which averaged 40 points a game. This high-powered offense was led by senior quarterback Tyriek Starks.

The 6’2”, 186 pound, playmaker had an incredible senior campaign throwing for 4,452 yards and 41 touchdowns. He also had 11 rushing touchdowns. These great stats and his ability to make plays on the field has helped him get noticed by college programs.

With a week-and-half to go until National Signing Day on Feb. 3, Starks has thus far received 13 offers from schools all over the country. He has already taken two visits to Jackson State and Southern and will taking an official visit to Kansas this weekend. Next weekend he has plans to take one more visit before making his final college decision.

In an exclusive Recruiting News Guru interview, I sat down with Tyriek to talk about his recruiting process and his upcoming visit to Kansas.

Interview

How many offers do you currently have?

“Thirteen; Louisiana-Monroe, Louisiana-Lafayette, Southeastern, Nichols State, Jackson State, Southern, New Mexico State, Kent State, Grambling State, Georgia Southern, Howard, Central Florida and Kansas.”

Have you taken any visits?

“Jackson State and Southern so far.”

How did those visits go?

“It was a great visit at Jackson State. They have the biggest stadium in the SWAC conference. The Southern visit was fun. They have a great atmosphere.”

Do you have a visit this weekend?

“Yes, I’m going to Kansas.”

Who have you talked to at Kansas and what have they told you?

“I’ve talked to Head Coach (David) Beaty, Coach (Kenny) Perry (co-defensive coordinator) and Coach (Jason) Phillips (wide receivers coach). They basically told me they weren’t looking for a quarterback until they saw my film. They need a program changer and that’s what they saw in me when they watched my film.”

After your visit to Kansas, do you have any more visits planned?

“I will visit Georgia Southern or New Mexico State on Jan. 29 but I’m not leaning one way or the other right now.”

When do you plan on releasing a list with your top schools?

“After this weekend I will release a Top 5 list.”

Do you know when you will make your final college decision?

“I plan on committing a week before National Signing Day. I don’t want to do it on National Signing Day because there is too much going on.”

Thank you for your time. Good luck in the rest of your recruiting process and enjoy your visit to Kansas.

“Thank you sir.”

Quick question on Starks and the stat numbers included in your article. When you look back at the individual stats from each game, they don’t add up to anything near 4K + yards passing. I could only find stats for 9 of the 14 game played. In those 9 games Starks had only 1754 passing yards and 12 passing TDs. What is the source of your statistics?

    Thank you,

Those are the stats he gave me when I interviewed him. They did seem high to me so I double-checked with him to make sure they were from just his senior season and not his whole career at Warren Easton. Thanks for the reading the article.
