The usual attrition of roster adjustments and realignments are in full swing in Baton Rouge with the announcement of two more wide receivers leaving the program.
Since the 2015 college football season ended, LSU has already lost highly prized wide receiver John Diarse who transferred to TCU. On Tuesday, former 4-star Class of 2013 recruit Kevin Spears (Holy Cross High School) and former 4-star Class of 2014 Trey Quinn (Barbe High School) announced they would seek on the field opportunities with another program.
Quinn had nine games started in two seasons appearing in 25 games. With LSU’s lack of a passing attack, all receivers’ numbers were down but the Lake Charles area native was relegated to 22 total receptions for 276 yards without a score during the 2014 and 2015 seasons.
The drop off in all the field production is night and day for Quinn from his high school days. Quinn left Barbe as the national all-time leader in receiving yards with 6,566 passing former record holder Dorial Green-Beckham (Missouri) and set a Louisiana state career record with 357 receptions. His senior year was capped off with 1,967 receiving yards and 23 touchdowns scored.
The rise to football stardom was different for Spears as compared to Quinn. The New Orleans native played one year of high school football coming up with 60 receptions for 1,060 yards with 11 scores. Spears had three reported offers out of high school with LSU, Louisiana Tech, and San Diego State seeking his skill set at the next level. LSU redshirted Spears in 2013 seeing action in three games in 2014 and nine during his sophomore season in 2015. Spears did not log a reception in two years of action.
LSU will have their top two receivers from last year back in Malachi Dupre (43/698/6) and Travin Dural (28/533/3). John Diarse (13/137/0) was the fourth leading receiver for the Tigers during the 2015 season. Sophomore running back Leonard Fournette was third on the roster with 19 receptions for 253 yards with one score.
The Tigers 2016 recruiting class saw three 4-star receivers sign; Drake Davis (Bradenton, FL), Stephen Sullivan (Donaldsonville, LA), and Dee Anderson (New Orleans, LA).
