A frustrating 2020 college football season for LSU and the Tigers’ fanbase was ratcheted up a notch on Wednesday with head coach Ed Orgeron announcing his starting quarterback Myles Brennan is likely out for the remainder of the season.
Fresh off a record-setting 15-0 national championship season a year ago, hopes were high that LSU (2-3) could replicate that same success this season in a 10-game conference run. But after a shocking 44-34 season opening loss at home to an unranked Mississippi State team, the fortunes for the then- No. 6 Tigers have spiraled downwards. The one bright spot giving LSU a chance to win every game on the schedule, Brennan.
In his first season starting in Baton Rouge, the junior quarterback was on point from the opening kickoff throwing for 345 yards with three scores against Mississippi State. That effort was backed by a 337-yard 4-touchdown game against Vanderbilt and a 430-yard 4-TD game against Missouri.
In that Missouri game (Oct. 10), Brennan tried to gain extra yards on a QB-keeper taking a big hit from safety Tyree Gillespie. That hit resulted in a torn muscle in his abdomen. Brennan continued to play through the pain for three quarters in a 45-41 losing effort.
The Tigers next scheduled game against Florida was postponed due to COVID protocols. LSU’s schedule continued taking a 52-24 home win against South Carolina behind a season-best rushing effort with true freshman TJ Finley getting the start. Finley was solid against the Gamecocks completing 17 of 21 attempts for 265 yards with two touchdowns against one interception. But in a 48-11 loss to Auburn, the Louisiana native had less success connecting on 13 of 24 passes for 143 yards without a touchdown tossed while throwing two picks. Fellow true freshman Max Johnson got a late call from the sidelines getting his first real action of the season.
Talking to reporters on Wednesday about Brennan’s injury, Coach Orgeron shared, “It doesn’t look like he’s going to be back, unless some miraculous thing happens.”
LSU’s scheduled game this weekend against SEC West rival Alabama has been pushed due to COVID protocols. If the schedule holds true, the very young LSU offense will face an improved Arkansas squad on Nov. 21 in Fayetteville.
