Persistence won the day for Memphis’ football staff on Monday earning a hard-fought recruiting battle for Class of 2018 wide receiver Levar Gumms. The win on the recruiting trail adds the 16th verbal commitment to the Tigers’ class netting their third prospect out of the Lone Star State.
With the 2017 season set to begin for Dekaney High School on Friday against Alief Taylor, their new standout wide receiver went public with his ideal school kicking off a week full of excitement and anticipation. Gumms will take his first snaps with the Wildcats after playing receiver and free safety for L.W. Higgins High School in Monroe (LA) during the 2016 season.
Gumms showed great open-field speed and athleticism during his junior campaign against Louisiana 5A competition. Dekaney posted a 5-6 mark in 2016 in Texas 6A Region II District 16 action falling out of the first round of the playoffs against a tough Klein Collins team. During the 2017 season, Gumms will get to showcase his skills against well-known Houston area programs like Klein Oak, Nimitz, Westfield, Spring, and Aldine.
Memphis fans found out about the good news when Gumms posted his decision on Twitter writing, “I am committed…” with the following statement:
The 16 verbal commitments to the Tigers’ 2018 class is ranked No. 71 in the nation by both 247Sports and Rivals, eighth best in the AAC. Of the 16 commits, the haul is spread out over seven states. The other Texas recruits joining Gumms in west Tennessee includes Coppell quarterback Brady McBride and Cedar Hill running back Cameron Fleming.
