Given time, Miami head coach Mario Cristobal and his staff are building recruiting borders locking down high profile players in Dade and Broward counties with a developing pipeline to Bradenton’s IMG Academy. The latest win in keeping backyard players home came Friday night when Miami Central linebacker Vincent Shavers committed to the Hurricanes.
Holding 28 offers with considerations towards Rutgers, Kentucky, Louisville, and Maryland, Miami won out.
The relationship between Shavers and linebackers coach “D-Nic” Derek Nicholson heavily influenced Shavers’ decision.
“It started with coach D-Nic,” Shavers said. “When he got there as their linebackers coach that is when it started. We have a good relationship. We play Madden, and he texts me about defenses.”
The lean towards Miami started this spring.
“It probably started when I went on my second visit this spring,” Shavers stated. “Because, with Miami it is not far, and there’s nothing like playing for the Crib. Coach D-Nic is very cool. We run the same thing at Central; it is very familiar. And (2023 DE) Rueben (Bain) and (2022 LB) Wesly (Bissainthe) are there.”
On the overall recruiting process with Miami, Shavers said, “It has been great. Everything is good with them. Fantastic. I love them.”
Asked how it feels committing to Miami, Shavers replied, “It feels great. It is a dream come true. I worked hard for this.”
Shavers is the eighth verbal commitment for Miami in the 2024 class.
