The offer sheet is piling up with top college football programs from around the for Hylton “Drake” Stubbs country with more opportunities on the horizon. Roaming the secondary for Mandarin High School (Jacksonville, Fla.), 27 scholarships have been awarded to Stubbs (6-2, 189) but a big push is coming from in-state squads.
The Mustangs’ 5-2 start was covered by Stubbs.
“Our season is going pretty good,” Stubbs said. “We took two bad losses, but we took a big “W” to get back on our feet in our last game (vs. Westside). Other than that, everything is going well. We beat Bolles (42-35); that was a big win. We came out hot, now we have to get back on our feet for the rest of the season.”
The four-star prospect is one of the leaders on Mandarin this fall credited with 34 tackles. His ball-hawking skills are catching next-level scouts’ attention.
“They are loving it,” Stubbs stated. “College coaches are loving that I have been going hard since my freshman year and that I am progressing. They are seeing that I am getting better. I have three picks this year, I only had two the last two years; they love that. They see me getting better.”
The programs taking an interest in Stubbs was listed, “Oregon, Colorado, Clemson, Ohio State, and Notre Dame.”
Stubbs continued sharing which coaching staffs are lighting up his phone.
“Definitely Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Oklahoma, Texas A&M – there are a lot of schools I am talking to a lot,” Stubbs said. “Wisconsin, Miami, Michigan, and definitely FSU.”
Florida State, Florida, and Miami have welcomed Stubbs to campus already this fall. The Saturdays spent with each program was covered.
Florida State: “That was pretty cool. My brother (Harold Stubb IV) got in the game, that was awesome. That was the best part of the game for me. It was a blow out win (vs. Southern Miss) for FSU, that was cool. I talked to coach (Adam) Fuller (DC), coach (Mike) Norvell, and coach Pat (Surtain Sr. – DB). The defense was lights out.”
Florida: “Florida’s defense was lights out (vs. Tennessee). I love what coach (Austin) Armstrong is doing. He is a young coach. I think they are top two in the SEC in defense, and they are playing young cats too. I love everything about Florida. The atmosphere was crazy.”
Miami: “The Miami visit was cool. They lost at the last second (vs. Georgia Tech). I saw safeties going crazy, LaMiles Brooks (GT) and James Williams (UM) had picks. The safeties out there were going crazy. I talked to coach (Mario) Cristobal and some of the other coaches. The Miami visit was cool; it was great.”
More was provided on the one-on-one with coach Cristobal, “He said he loves my film for this year. He told me to keep balling and doing my thing.”
Three more visits are likely for Stubbs in the coming weeks.
“I’m trying to get to Oklahoma soon,” Stubbs said. “It will more than likely be the West Virginia game (Nov. 11). I am going to the Florida vs. Georgia game in Jacksonville (Oct. 28). I am going to back to Florida State for the Duke game on Oct. 21.”
