Being part of a winning program is a big boost to players when it comes to college football recruiting. Under the spotlight of big wins and state championships at Bellevue High School, when next level scouts arrive in the state of Washington, they know time spent with the Wolverines is time spent learning about future collegiate standouts. The 2023 run to grab a ring helped Willi Wascher (6-3, 283) land an offer from the Miami Hurricanes.
No matter which side of the ball one looks on, Bellevue has talent. The squad posted an 11-2 record capturing a 3A state title. On the offensive side of the ball, the Wolverines enforced their will on the opposition running the ball right down their collective throats. That was possible thanks to Wascher at center.
“At the beginning it was rough moving from left tackle to center, but as the season went on it fell into place,” Wascher stated. “Everything went smooth. It ended the way we wanted it to.”
Taking on that new role, Wascher had amble opportunity to improve upon his game.
“I would say probably getting to the second and third level, and moving big bodies off the line were my biggest improvements,” Wascher said. “I think one thing that stands out on my film is getting to the second level and finishing my blocks.”
Asked about the experience winning a state championship, Wascher replied, “It was pretty amazing. I’ve been playing with these guys pretty much my whole career, since I was seven years old. It was a good way to leave with the seniors going out.”
The focus for Wascher now turns to his senior run.
“I am staying at center, and I will play more defense next year,” Wascher shared. “My offseason workouts are five to six times a week. I am staying in shape, working on getting to the second level, and working on my angles and assignments.”
The play in the trenches is bringing interest from the backyard powerhouse.
“UDUB (Washington) has reached out and they have talked to me at school,” Wascher said.
Nevada has offered, and Miami extended their scholarship opportunity on Dec. 11. Adding that offer from the ‘Canes was detailed.
“Coach Alex Mirabal (OL) offered me,” Wascher shared. “I expected something was coming soon after putting in that offseason work; it was very exciting getting that offer. The reality of playing at the next level is exciting. There is a possibility of playing at the next level now, it is pretty amazing.”
Wascher continued, “I know their coach is one of the best offensive line coaches in the country. It is exciting to receive an offer from there. I looked them up, they have a good team connection. Miami is a place I am looking to visiting.”
