On his good days he’s still mean, and on his bad days he’s even nastier – that is the type of play Newberry High School (Newberry, Fla.) is getting out of defensive tackle/nose guard Jarquez Carter (6-2, 285). The three-star prospect was beastly throughout his sophomore season abusing interior linemen, running backs, and quarterbacks. The skill, strength, athleticism, and production has brought 15 offers to the party.
If an offensive lineman is caught leaning on a called run, play over, Carter has squashed it. Double teams, he will split, one-on-ones, his get-off, use of hands, and moves has him living in the opposition’s backfield.
Carter spoke about how he pushed his game forward over the offseason, “I worked on staying on my get-off, working against the run, I needed help with that, and I learned some new pass rush moves. I want everything locked down in the pass rush game.”
Playing three-, one-tech, and end, Carter shared where he is seeing gains in his skills two games into the Panthers’ 2023 season, “I am a better run stopper, and my get-off is way faster than last year.”
Over the summer, Carter camped at Florida State and Florida while performing at a private workout with Clemson. Separate visits were taken to UCF, Florida State, and Notre Dame.
The teams watching Carter with a potential offer in waiting was listed, “USC, FSU, Virginia, and Duke.”
Miami, UCF, Notre Dame, and Penn State are among the teams keeping Carter’s phone buzzing. Those in the mix may see the 2025 prospect soon.
“I am going to Miami this weekend,” Carter said. “I am also going to Florida for the Gators’ game against Tennessee (Sept. 16), to FSU for their game against Duke (Oct. 21), and I want to go to a Tennessee game.”
Hanging in south Florida to see the Hurricanes take on the Aggies has Carter pumped.
“I am really excited,” Carter stated. “I have a lot of family down there. It is like home for me there; I am from down there. I get to go to Hard Rock Stadium; it will be a good experience.”
With repeated interactions with the Seminoles, Carter updated his rapport with the Seminoles.
“They like me a lot,” Carter shared. “They want to see more of me. I had to get a plate removed from my ankle, they want to see how I play this year. They like me a lot; I am building a great relationship with them.”
The offer from the Volunteers was announced on Aug. 24, that was a big day for the three-star.
“When they offered me, I was excited,” Carter said. “I have always liked the way they play. I want to go up there and watch their d-line play and see how everything is there.”
Carter put on a show a year ago tallying 78 stops with 23 tackles for a loss, 10 sacks, and eight QB hurries with two passes batted down, three forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery. There has been no let up this season with 10 tackles, five solo, six tackles for a loss, a sack, and two QB hurries through two games.
