Rockhurst High School, located in Kansas City, Missouri, had a very successful 2017 regular season as the Hawklets finished 6-3. In the opening round of the playoffs, Rockhurst defeated Lee’s Summit 7-0 to advance to the second round where they will host Lee’s Summit West for a berth in the state quarterfinals. The Hawklets’ offense averages 23.2 points a game and the leader of this pro-style unit is senior quarterback Derek Green, son of former NFL quarterback Trent Green.
The 6’4”, 185 pound, signal-caller is having a solid senior campaign throwing for 1,427 yards with 11 touchdowns and running for 338 yards and three more scores. Green has the incredible ability to create things out of nothing by using his legs to extend plays.
The Class of 2018 prospect currently has a 3.45 GPA and is receiving interest from schools such as North Carolina, Indiana, and Kansas State.
In an exclusive Recruiting News Guru interview, I sat down with Derek to discuss his recruiting process and his career at Rockhurst.
Interview
What are your thoughts on the season so far?
“We are about six plays from being undefeated. The three games we lost, we were in the game, and little things just didn’t go our way for the win. We are in a good spot as we continue down the road in the playoffs.”
What are your thoughts on your individual performance this season?
“Our offense is more of a pro-style offense. We build our offense around the run and play-action off of it. We will throw out of the gun every now and then. My stats won’t blow people away but I do what my team asks of me for us to win.”
What was your most memorable moment of your high school career?
“The most memorable part of my high school football career was my first varsity passing touchdown my sophomore year.”
Are you receiving any college interest?
“I have talked with a lot of different colleges and coaches.”
Do you have any college offers?
“I have received two preferred walk-on offers from North Carolina and Indiana.”
Have you been on any college visits?
“I have taken visits to Northwestern, Nebraska, North Carolina, Kansas, Central Arkansas, Western Michigan, Georgetown, and Northern Iowa.”
What is your biggest strength on the football field?
“My biggest strength on the football field is my ability to extend plays and create something out of nothing.”
Have you won any individual awards?
“I was the camp MVP at different summer college camps.”
Who has had the biggest influence on your football career?
“The biggest influences on my football career are my dad and brother, T.J.”
Do you have any hobbies outside of football?
“My hobbies include music and baseball. I play outfield on the baseball team.”
Which team is your favorite football team?
“The Kansas City Chiefs.”
What is your GPA?
“3.45.”
