Ryan Jostes is on the path to following in the footsteps of his grandfather by making it to the land of professional football. The young phenom at Washington High School is featured on all three sides of the ball seeing time at the tight end, defensive end, and punter positions.
The 6’6”, 230-pound, beast plays with great intensity and physicality while also having good hands, footwork, and leadership.
This Class of 2024 prospect has been working hard since the start of the summer to hone his craft and potentially earn his first college offer in the near future.
In an exclusive Recruiting News Guru interview, I caught up with Ryan to talk about his career at Washington High School and get an update on his recruiting process.
Interview
Ryan, what are your thoughts on your sophomore season thus far?
It’s an honor to be a starter on a team that has gone 18-4 over the last two seasons. I have had a good start but I have many things that I can improve on. I have set some high goals and believe the best way to reach them is to work hard.
What has been your most memorable moment in 2021?
Earning a spot on the varsity football team. I have had the goal of being the starting tight end for the Blue Jays since I was 11 years old. I also have increased my vertical jump by seven inches in 2021 which is proof that the time in the gym is paying off.
How many different positions do you play for the Blue Jays?
I am the starting tight end and punter, plus I also spend a little time at defensive end.
What are your strengths on the football field?
I am a thinker and use that to my advantage and believe in playing hard until the whistle. Many think football is just a physical game and it is that. But it is also a mental game in which technique, execution, and awareness make a big difference.
How would you describe your style of play?
Playing smart, low, fast, and aggressive best describes my style. For me, a pancake block is just as exciting as catching a touchdown. A tight end should want to do both.
How do your skills fit into the Blue Jays offensive scheme?
My head coach, Mr. Heflin, likes to run the ball and we are averaging about 400 yards rushing per game. My speed, strength, and size allow me to set up run blocks both at the line of scrimmage and downfield.
Is there an NFL player that you try to model your game after?
I watched Albert Okwuegbunam of the Denver Broncos play for several years at the University of Missouri. I like that he is large, physical, and lightning-fast. He has great hands and provides his quarterback an obvious target in the end zone. I could see myself playing like him as I continue to develop my all-around game.
What are your maxes in the weight room?
My max squat is 365, my max bench is 225, and my max power clean is 215.
What is your fastest 40-yard dash time?
My best time was clocked at 4.87 by strength, agility, and explosion trainer Raphael (Cinco) Perry at my local gym The Competitive Edge. Besides being one of my trainers Cinco is also the football coach for the Catholic School in town. I plan to refine my technique and to continue to shave time off of that number.
Which is your favorite football team?
My favorite college team is Missouri. In the NFL, I like the Baltimore Ravens.
Do you play any other sports at Washington High School?
I’m a forward for the basketball team.
What is your favorite subject in school and why?
I like math, particularly algebra because you have to think deeply to solve the equations. I also like my German language class.
Who is your role model and why?
My grandpa, Randy Jostes. He played football at Missouri and played in the USFL and a little in the NFL. He’s a Christian and a good man.
Did you attend any camps this past offseason?
Yes, I trained at the Elite Football Academy in St. Louis for two days a week after basketball season ended. I also attended the Missouri Tigers Football Camp this summer. Coach (Elijah) Drinkwitz is a great leader, and I think he is doing good things.
Are you receiving interest from any schools?
I’ve received several football forms asking questions, not sure if that counts? I plan to play for the Midwest Boom 7v7 team this offseason and hope to turn more heads my way.
What is your GPA?
3.4.
Do you have a favorite quote or Bible verse?
Yes. Philippians 4:13- I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
