Rowan Risner burst onto the high school football scene during his sophomore season ripping Colorado defenses for 3,154 yards with 28 touchdowns keeping the heat on through last fall. Moving the pigskin down the field spraying the ball around the yard for Fairview High School (Boulder) is attracting attention. Regional Mountain West teams are catching onto Risner along with Ivy League programs.
Harvard, Northern Colorado, Colorado State, and Wyoming are among the teams showing interest in Risner. The Rams hosted Risner in Fort Collins this spring.
“It was great,” Risner said. “It was really cool. There was a small group of us. I got to talk to their QB coach (Matt Mumme); it was a great experience.”
The Cowboys impressed Risner while in Laramie.
“On that visit, there was a bigger group; I was there for a Junior Day, but I really liked their stadium and facilities,” Risner stated. “Wyoming has a really nice program.”
Ready to show what he can do under collegiate guidance, Risner is setting up a busy summer camp schedule.
“I am going to Harvard, and maybe to some more Ivy League camps, Colorado, Colorado State, UNC (Northern Colorado), and maybe Wyoming,” Risner shared. “I’ve been in contact with Drake’s coaches for their camps. That is all I have planned right now.”
Preparing for the camps and the 2023 schedule, Risner has been hard at work.
“This offseason I have really been working on my speed and athleticism,” Risner said. “I am getting better at throwing on the run, throwing deeper, and with the fundamentals.”
Part of Risner’s spring has been spent with the Colorado based Ducks 7-on-7 team competing in tournaments.
“My improvements this spring, I’d say my QB sense and knowledge of the game,” Risner stated. “Playing 7-on-7 helps with reads, my timing, and understanding concepts. It has been helpful.”
After Risner’s big sophomore season, his Fairview squad was a balanced offense in 2023 compiling 2,335 passing yards and 2,370 rushing yards thanks to 1,000-yard senior tailback Zach Lewis. When college coaches turn on Risner’s film this fall, they will see the 2024 prospect in full command of the Knights’ offense.
“Our offense is a total Spread offense,” Risner said. “We will pass about 90 percent of the time. Last year we had a great running back, we were 50-50 with the pass and run. This year, we will pass a lot more.”
