Junior college players across the country seek recruiting attention from coaches at four-year programs, but a Mt. San Antonio College offensive lineman got his attention the wrong way. Saturday during a game against Ventura College, Schirmer punched a ref during the game quickly becoming a known name on the recruiting trail for all the wrong reasons.

Video showed Schirmer, 6-5, 270 pounds, jawing with defensive players from Ventura College after a play inside the red zone. The ref tried to break up the extra circular activities getting sucker punched by the freshman in the process.

Mt. SAC’s football Twitter account tried to explain away the incident posting, “For those of you unable to attend the game last night, the athlete involved did not intentionally attack the referee. The referee was accidentally struck during the scrum while pulling the players off. The referee has decided not to press charges knowing Bernard Schirmer did not intend to hit him.”

The message has since been deleted and there are no confirmations that the ref knocked out has decided to let Schirmer walk free without charges. After the game, police arrested Schirmer on assault charges for hitting the ref.

Ventura won the game 34-29.

Schirmer graduated from Lakewood High School in Lakewood, California in 2015.
