The 2023 high school football season is upon us, and big moves are still happening that will help shape the landscape of the game in different states. In the Garden State, West Orange High School added a rising weapon in the pocket when Charlie LaMorte transferred from Don Bosco Prep.
Rising through the ranks with the Ironmen, LaMorte (6-2, 210) has taken a crash course in the Mountaineers’ offense over the last couple of days.
“We run a Spread, some under center, but mostly a Spread no-huddle offense,” LaMorte shared. “We run a lot of mash concepts; I am still getting used to everything. The offense has a lot of quick game routes. The receivers are running seams, and everyone watch out when we go deep.”
For those not familiar with the strong-armed QB with a fluid motion, LaMorte detailed his style of play.
“I am a play making QB,” LaMorte stated. “I try to compare myself to Patrick Mahomes (Chiefs) because I can throw anything, and with my scrambling and being able to run. Being a pocket passer, when I have to, when things are not going right, I am scrambling and making plays.
“Caleb Williams (USC) is someone else I compare myself to; we are about the same height, weight, and have the same playing style. I am taking what the defense gives me.”
Holding an offer from Akron, LaMorte made the rounds over the summer to help push his name up recruiting boards.
“I went to camps at Penn State, Akron, Boston College, I visited Rutgers for a 7-on-7 tournament, and I went to a Princeton camp,” LaMorte said. “I visited Syracuse and Michigan over the offseason as well.”
The time spinning it in front of college coaches worked; there’s a long list of teams ready to scout the Class of 2025 prospect’s upcoming season.
“Duke, Old Dominion, Virginia Tech, Syracuse, Penn State, Dartmouth, Princeton, pretty much all the Ivy Leagues, Boston College, Austin Peay, Virginia, Temple, and Pitt are showing interest; there are a lot of schools showing interest,” LaMorte shared. “I have talked to Wake Forest and a lot of Power 5 schools; they are just waiting on my film.”
With the interest comes Saturdays spent on college campuses this fall.
“I am supposed to go to Old Dominion for a game, but I don’t know now when I may go because my schedule has changed,” LaMorte stated. “I plan to go to Duke and Virginia Tech. Pitt has invited me to all their home games. I want to go back to Penn State as well.”
With the last-minute transfer, LaMorte is expecting to be back on the field with the Mountaineers by Week 3 of the regular season.
