On the gridiron, experience counts for something, especially at quarterback. When the 2023 New York high school football season kicks off for Waverly High School, senior quarterback Joey Tomasso will bring 37 career varsity games into the pocket. The vast experience and consistently rising numbers over the years for the dual threat is grabbing attention throughout the Northeast as camp season begins.
A solid sophomore season was produced for Tomasso piling up 1,847 passing yards with 18 touchdowns tossed while covering 552 yards on the ground with 13 more scores. Last fall, Tomasso bested himself spreading the pigskin around the yard for 2,239 yards lighting up the board 24 times with 818 yards on the ground reaching the end zone 14 times.
The style of offense Tomasso runs with the Wolverines was explained.
“We run a nice Spread offense,” Tomasso said. “We space the field out. Our offense is air heavy. We throw the ball a lot; we throw it downfield good amount. In our offense, we throw hitches and speed outs for five yards just like teams that like to run the ball.”
Tomasso has the skills that fit the scheme.
“I really feel like with this offense, I get rid of the ball quickly,” Tomasso stated. “We like to take those deep concepts; we are good at getting the ball downfield and with our short and intermediate passes.”
Off time over the spring has been spent working with former NFL QB Jim Kubiak.
“I have been working on my footwork with my QB coach Jim Kubiak,” Tomasso said. “We work from under center a lot; coach Kubiak has helped me with that. At Waverly, we don’t do it as much. I’m working on it just in case for college.”
Teams are coming by Waverly to see Tomasso throw this spring.
“There are a lot of schools showing interest,” Tomasso stated. “I threw for Syracuse on Monday. Other schools have filtered through – Colgate came by earlier, Fordham two weeks ago, and UNH came down last week.”
Tomasso is receiving feedback from the collegiate scouts.
“A lot of them have been really nice,” Tomasso shared. “I heard a lot from Fordham, they are analyzing my film. UNH looked at my film from the Elite 11 and like it. Syracuse also likes it. I will be throwing for Colgate soon, hopefully they like.”
Some of the same teams worked to get the three-star prospect on campus this spring.
“I went on a Junior Day at Fordham,” Tomasso said. “I went to Colgate, UNH, Yale, and Buffalo. UMass invited me to one of their Junior Days, but I couldn’t make it. Last year I went on game day visits to Boston College, James Madison, and Buffalo; those were really nice as well.”
Upcoming visits will be tied in with summer camp opportunities.
“Vilanova is an unofficial visit I have coming up,” Tomasso shared. “I will camp there right after that in June. Auburn sent me a camp invite. I am going to Buffalo’s camp. Yale sent me a really nice personal letter for their camp. I have been talking to (head) coach (Tony) Reno for a little bit now, I will probably go there as well.”
Off the field, Tomasso also stars for the Wolverines on the diamond playing shortstop and on the hardwood.
“In baseball, we just won our conference championship,” Tomasso stated. “We had a good season in basketball as well.”
Tomasso continued, “I am hitting .475, and only have two errors on the season. I have been solid defensively this year. We start back up next Monday in the playoffs.”
