When Ethan Royal (6-0, 170) takes the field for Hough High School (Cornelius, NC) this fall, he will have a crowd watching. The 2027 field general opened eyes this summer on the college camp circuit, one that is still ongoing for the three-offer recruit.
Royal updated his summer of travel hitting college campuses.
“I went to NC State, (North) Carolina, ECU (East Carolina), I just went to Campbell on Saturday, and I went to Auburn,” Royal stated.
Down on The Plains, Royal turned in a top performance.
“I spun it best at Auburn,” Royal said. “I was hitting the places where the QB coach was telling me to hit; I was hitting it. I was hitting everything in stride and did well during one-on-ones. Overall, I had an outstanding performance.”
There are two more camps on the schedule for Royal.
“I am going to Appalachian State towards the end of July; that will be my last camp,” Royal shared. “My school is going to a mega camp, a big mega camp.”
Contact with Mountaineers’ offensive coordinator/quarterback coach Frank Ponce has Royal excited about his trip to Boone.
“The connection I have with their QB coach,” Royal stated. “I have talked to him on Twitter a little bit, he asked me to come out for the camp.”
When the camp season is completed, Royal will be back in Cornelius preparing for the upcoming season.
“We are a run-pass offense,” Royal said. “We are more like an Air Raid offense.”
Working off-campus with QB coach Anthony Boone, Royal broke down what he’s been working on this summer.
“I have been working on off-platform making plays; these d-ends are no joke,” Royal stated. “I’m going off platform, getting out of the pocket, and moving in the pocket is all that I have been working on.”
Holding offers from Alabama-Birmingham, Arkansas, and Campbell, Appalachian State, Maryland, and Liberty are among the teams showing interest. Once the 2023 season gets underway, Royal wants to return to The Plains to further develop that relationship.
“I will visit Auburn for a game,” Royal said. “I am excited to see them play, see the atmosphere there with all the fans, see the game-day atmosphere, and see what they go through before a game.”
