Speed, size, football IQ, hands – Riverside City College (Cali.) receiver Jessie Campbell has it all. The Class of 2024 prospect has showcased the skills this season with college teams taking notice. In the last week, the former Mater Dei Catholic three-star prospect has picked up three scholarship offers with more heavy D-I interest coming his way.
The 6-foot, 2-inch, 185-pound, talent is more than just an easy target for quarterbacks, he has the burst in space to get separation and the headiness to improvise on the fly leading to big plays. The Tigers (8-0) have hit Campbell 23 times for 404 yards with six touchdowns posted.
“Our season is going great,” Campbell said. “We are the No. 1 team in the state. We have a big game against San Diego Mesa coming up. We are 8-0, but we are taking it one game at a time. Our goal is a national title. With each opponent, we have to treat it like a playoff game. We have to execute, and everything will take care of itself.”
The big play offense under head coach Tom Craft was explained.
“Our offense is like a pro-style with RPOs, spread and trips,” Campbell stated. “We run a lot of go balls, deep posts, over routes, and we also like the quick game. If the corner is playing off because of my speed, my coach does not mind taking the slants and hitches all day. Our coach is really running an Air Raid. It is fun to play in the offense because it is an Air Raid offense. It is fun executing the offseason.”
As part of the 2021 recruiting class, Campbell signed with Southern Utah. The time developing in Cedar City with the Thunderbirds was covered.
“At Southern Utah, I learned it is about hard work and putting a lot of time into your craft,” Campbell shared. “At that level, there are a lot of people that have talent, there are a lot of good people. Once you are there, it is about everything that you do after practice, watching a film and getting extra reps. It really is the small things that turn into big things.”
Putting it all together as a rising star in the 2024 class, Campbell spoke about what he is putting on film for college coaches to see.
“I think first and foremost I am showcasing my speed, that is my best threat right now,” Campbell said. “I am showcasing my versatility as well. I am expanding my game instead of just being a deep threat, I am also running screens. I have expanded my game, and I am doing more as teams watch film on me.”
Campbell’s third offer came during our interview.
“I have two offers, I just picked them up this week,” Campbell stated. “Tennessee-Martin was my first and my second came last night from Western Illinois.”
After a break in our conversation due to an incoming call, Campbell shared, “Ryan, I just picked up my third offer from McNeese State.”
Campbell continued, “He said he loves my speed, ball skills, and loves everything I have put on tape, both him and the coaching staff. He said we are offering you a full scholarship.”
On adding that third offer to the sheet, Campbell explained, “It was a great blessing. I want to thank God; without him I am nothing. I have to keep working. I have a championship to win; that is my main focus.
“I want to win a championship with my teammates and coaches. This will be my last time playing with this group of guys. I want to enjoy the last few weeks I have with them.”
More next-level opportunities are in the works.
“I am being heavily recruited by Eastern Michigan, Texas State, Oregon, Massachusetts, and San Diego State,” Campbell shared.
The next part of Campbell’s recruitment is setting up unofficial and official visits.
“I will start taking visits when we are in the playoffs or after the season,” Campbell stated. “UT-Martin, they already said they would get my plane ticket for an official visit. I am pretty sure I will visit all the schools that have offered me showing my appreciation to them for them trusting me to play for their school.”
