At all levels of the game, versatility is key on the gridiron, and on both sides of the ball. Modern era defenders have to be fast and agile especially when facing prolific dual threat quarterbacks who can scorch the field with their arm and their legs. At Lewisville High School (Texas), the Farmers have that guy in three-star 2024 prospect Ethan Terrell.
The Farmers got 1,301 passing yards out of Terrell (6-3, 195) last season with 1,080 yards on the ground. Terrell lit up the scoreboard accounting for 25 total touchdowns. The Lewisville offense was explained.
“We are a really big RPO (run-pass) offense,” Terrell said. “We spread it around and get the ball to our playmakers. The offense is really big on getting players in space to make plays, getting them in open space. That can be with me running, a swing pass, or a screen, anyway possible we are working to get the ball in space.”
The experience gained last fall has helped Terrell’s progress this offseason.
“I feel like knowing who you are, being confident and poised is important,” Terrell shared. “You know you have the talent, you have the spotlight, then it is about harnessing it and using it on the field. During my junior year I did that. During my sophomore year I was nervous. I harnessed it last year to be honest.”
Despite leading the Farmers to a 12-2 record last season with the stat column filled, there are still aspects of Terrell’s game he feels are overlooked.
“My playmaking skills outside of the pocket and my ability to extend plays,” Terrell stated. “I am more Patrick Mahomes and some of Lamar Jackson. I can extend it with my arm, and I can get out and run.”
Terrell covered the strengths to his game.
“There are not many quarterbacks that are as athletic as me with a great arm,” Terrell said. “There are quarterbacks who can run, but they don’t have the arm, or have the arm but can’t really run; I have both. I feel that I am more of a thrower than runner. They may not think, but they have to see.”
The offseason is all about improving and taking the skills to the next level, Terrell is putting in the time on his craft.
“I am working a lot mentally,” Terrell shared. “I’m in the film room a lot, studying and working on our plays. You can throw great and run great, but I feel what makes you elite is when you can change the protection and call out the blitz to slide the protection. Peyton Manning and Tom Brady, they set the bar for that. I have been working on that. I know I have the arm and can run, now I am taking the next step to being fully there.”
Nine teams have handed over scholarship opportunities to Terrell.
“My first offer was Northern Arizona, and then Austin Peay offered me at a TCU camp, then Texas Southern, Air Force, Jacksonville State, Sam Houston recently offered, Jackson State recently offered, Navy, and Mississippi Valley State,” Terrell stated.
More heavy hitters are evaluating the three-star recruit.
“There have been a lot of teams showing interest,” Terrell shared. “Houston, Dartmouth, UTSA, Baylor, Western Kentucky, Cal, they have a lot, Tulsa, Northwestern, Duke, Texas State; I can keep going.”
After spring visits with Arkansas and Texas State, Terrell is getting back out on the road this summer.
“I am looking forward to going to Houston, TCU, and UTSA invited me to come down for a photo shoot,” Terrell stated.
Terrell shared his enthusiasm for visiting the three in-state programs.
Houston: “I like their coaching staff; they are all following me. They have been recruiting me since my sophomore year. They are a school that takes time with their recruiting, but in the end, it will pay off. Houston is a great school. I have relatives that went there, and I have a cousin that played basketball there. It has been good. They have been rocking with me for two years. I went to their campus before; they have a beautiful stadium, great culture – great everything.”
TCU: “I’m looking forward to visiting them. Last year I went to their camp, their coach was impressed with me. I have seen their campus multiple times. TCU is a prestigious school, a great college with a great campus, and they are a great Christian school.”
UTSA: “I went to their camp my sophomore year; they’ve been recruiting me. Coach Sean Davis (QB), I appreciate him coming down to see me. They want me to come down, and to do a photo shoot. I am not sure what will happen then. UTSA’s coaching staff is great, and their stadium is beautiful.”
Terrell is putting together his college camp circuit for the summer which may include UTSA, the Ragin’ Cajuns (Louisiana), Houston, Texas State, Georgetown, and others.
