Another cautionary tale for high school and junior college quarterbacks out of the Division-I ranks surfaced on Thursday when news broke that Trevor Knight had asked for and was granted a release from his scholarship at the University of Oklahoma.
Knight’s Q-rating went through the roof at the end of his redshirt freshman season in 2013 after the Texas native sliced the Alabama Crimson Tide defense for 348 yards with four touchdowns in the 2014 Sugar Bowl earning game MVP honors in a 45-31 win. During the 2014 college football season, life in Norman and on the road in the Big 12 got a little more challenging seeing Knight finish the year with 2,300 yards passing connecting on 14 touchdowns while throwing 12 interceptions.
The Sooners fell below expectations going 8-5 in 2014 with head coach Bob Stoops firing co-offensive coordinators Josh Heupel and Jay Norvell in favor of Lincoln Riley in the aftermath. The Sooners, benefiting from a healthy rooster, have gone 11-1 winning the Big 12 and have earned the No. 4 see in the College Football Playoffs this season. Much of the credit of the season is laid upon Riley’s shoulders and transfer quarterback Baker Mayfield. Mayfield tore it up for Texas Tech before heading to Oklahoma and continued his strong play under center throwing for 3,389 yards with 35 touchdowns against five picks.
Knight appeared in six games for the Sooners in 2015 completing 22-of-40 passes for 305 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.
The writing is on the wall for the junior quarterback with Mayfield playing well in the pocket. Knight is expected to graduate at the end of the fall semester allowing immediate playing eligibility under NCAA rules for graduating seniors. Several schools have reportedly been contacted by Knight including Kansas State, SMU, Georgia, and Oregon.
