Ole Miss took two steps closer to filling their 2016 recruiting class landing wide receiver Tre Nixon and offensive lineman Royce Newman on Monday.
Newman’s commitment to the Rebels is sure to create some bad blood within SEC circles. Ole Miss was able to flip the longtime Missouri recruit after an official visit to Oxford on Jan. 22. The 6’7”, 260 pound, lineman committed to the Tigers on June 13, but offers started rolling in as the 2015 season started to come to a close. The Nashville (IL) talent had offers from Eastern Illinois, Illinois, Iowa State, and N.C. State, among others, but made an official visit to Nebraska on Dec. 11. Newman’s commitment to Ole Miss cuts off his official scheduled to Missouri on Jan. 29.
Tre Nixon’s commitment is the eighth 4-star recruit to join Ole Miss’ class, along with two 5-star players, offensive tackle Gregory Little and quarterback Shea Patterson. The Viera High School talent was one of the more widely recruited players in the nation ending his recruiting with over 40 scholarship offers.
The 6’1”, 170 pound, speedster jumped onto the recruiting scene in 2014 doing a little bit of everything rushing for 143 yards off 15 carries with three scores but made his mark in the passing attack hauling in 43 passes for 1,065 yards with 13 touchdowns. He continued the all-purpose trend as a senior rushing for 94 yards but killed it on the outside bringing in 74 passes for 1,224 yards with 18 scores.
Nixon took an official visit to Georgia on Jan. 15 and was one of many high end recruits visiting Oxford over the weekend. Nixon committed on Monday ahead of an official visit planned for Auburn on Jan. 29.
The Rebels now have 22 recruits with three slots to fill ahead of National Signing Day on Feb. 3.
