There is no shortage of fantastic high school football talents at Grayson High School, and David “Deuce” Smith Jr. plans to be the next to get the Loganville (Ga.) fans out of their seats on Friday nights. The Class of 2027 quarterback is gearing up to start for the Rams’ freshman team with goals to get junior varsity reps to help push him along that journey of one day leading the varsity squad through an always challenging 7A schedule.
Smith is a lock at QB, but his athletic talents can transfer over to other skill positions.
“You’ll see me at QB this season playing all the way through, but I can use my speed on the field,” Smith said. “I have great hands; I can switch to any skill position honestly.”
Executing the Rams’ Spread offense, Smith covered his offseason workouts.
“I am working on looking at defenses, knowing where people will be before the play, my pre-snap reads, my footwork, and my accuracy,” Smith stated.
Playing in 7-on-7 tournaments with Gwinnett Elite, Smith has been able to get extra reps to help perfect his craft.
“I used to struggle with predetermining where the ball would go but playing 7-on-7 has helped me read the defenses,” Smith shared. “With the experience, I know if the DB is playing like this, the receiver will cut here, and the ball will need to be there.”
Smith left the spring 7-on-7 circuit on a high note.
“We did pretty well this season,” Smith said. “We were in the semifinal or championship game in every tournament. In our last tournament in Tennessee, we won it all.”
The athletic exploits extend from the gridiron to the diamond. Smith doubles as a centerfielder, shortstop, and pitcher.
“Our baseball season, we did well,” Smith stated. “I got three rings. On Sunday, we got a medal for second place at the Perfect Game Tournament.”
Back on the gridiron, the recruiting process is already underway for Smith.
“Last year I went on a visit to Georgia Tech and Georgia,” Smith shared. “On Tuesday, I am going to Georgia State.”
Smith is pumped to spend me building bonds with the Panthers’ staff.
“I get to meet their coaches,” Smith said. “I was there when I was really little; I went to a spring game. This time I get to revisit knowing what football is about, not just to watch the game.”
A college camp circuit is being planned by Smith with his family and coaches. One possibility from an invite received is an opportunity to compete at Georgia Tech’s camp this summer.
