The thrill of turning on tape and watching where a player currently is with the foresight to know where he will be with hard work and dedication never gets old. That is the buzz generated watching film on James Rush. Rush (5-10, 165) took the field as a two-way player for Saline High School (Saline, Mich.) a year ago as a freshman and is back leading a hungry Hornets squad to a 2-0 start to the 2023 season.
The athletic talents are there and were highlighted at running back and cornerback in ’22. The style of offense and defense executed this year by Saline was covered.
“We run a Spread throwing the ball most of the time,” Rush stated. “On defense we run a 4-3 base. Most of our base coverages are Cover 5, 2, 4, and Cover 3.”
As well as Rush played as a freshman, expect even more from him this fall.
“I worked on being more explosive and more aggressive,” Rush shared. “Last year at DB, I wasn’t aggressive enough attacking the ball or making the plays I needed to make. On offense, I worked on being explosive and stronger. Last year I was a little timid, but this year, I will let them know who I am running past them or through them.”
Rush continued updating his progress in the Hornets early season wins.
“Our season has been good,” Rush said. “In our first game I had two touchdowns, a pass breakup, and a tackle. In our second game, I had two touchdowns, two or three pass breakups, and around four tackles.”
Showing no fear, Rush hit the road over the summer putting his skills on display at three powerhouse programs.
“I camped at Michigan, Michigan State, Florida, Toledo, and Ferris State,” Rush stated.
Making the long trip to Gainesville, Rush reflected on the Gators’ camp, “It was good. It was more of a learning experience, but I am glad I took the trip.”
After taking down Brighton and Dexter, Saline is back on the field this Friday with a home league game against Pioneer (1-1).
