Every high school football team seemingly has that guy who can do a little bit of everything an excel in the process. For Rancho Buena Vista High School, Isaac Jimenez is that guy. Lining up at receiver, he came up with an estimated stat line of 35 receptions for 400 yards with four trips into the end zone. Also starting at free safety, he tallied an estimated 50 stops with 10 passes broken up and one pick. Ahead of the college camp circuit, I sat down with the 6-0, 175-pound, Vista (CA) area product to learn more about his junior season, offseason workouts, and recruiting interest.
Interview
Isaac, how did your junior season go for you personally on the field?
“For me, it went really well. I wanted to accomplish more of my goals, but I feel I did well. I did what the team needed of me, and we won a lot of games.”
How were you used within the Longhorns offense?
“I’m an outside receiver; if we get a pick, they run a fade with me to keep the tempo going for a big play.”
Which areas of your game saw the biggest growth in 2017?
“My speed and my route running.”
What are you working on this offseason?
“This offseason, I have been working on speed, strength, and getting a better understanding of the game. I have been learning defenses and learning how to get open even better.”
Did you play 7v7 ball this spring?
“Yes. I played for Energy Athletes.”
How did that help further develop your overall game?
“It helped me by making things pop out to me more. With corners, they can press more in 7v7; that helps me get off the line in game. My route running and getting open has improved a lot with 7v7.”
How did spring practices go with the Longhorns?
“Spring practices are going well. We have three new defensive coaches, they know what they are talking about. It will be a fun season. We are live, competitive, and everyone is having fun out there.”
How is the team looking?
“We are looking good. I think we will have a very good season. Our main goal is to get a ring.”
Where all will you line up on the field during your senior year?
“I will be at receiver and free safety. On special teams, I’m a gunner on kickoffs.”
Which schools are showing recruiting interest in you?
“Davidson, Delta State University, and APU (Azusa Pacific).”
Have you taken any unofficial visits yet?
“Yes, sir. I have been to Cal, Fresno State, and San Jose State.”
Do you have any planned visits upcoming?
“I plan on going on an unofficial to APU and to San Diego State.”
Have you attended any camps and/or combines this spring?
“I attended the Rivals combine.”
Do you have any upcoming college camps on the schedule?
“There is an APU camp on June 9th, I am going to that camp.”
How is everything going in the classroom?
“My GPA is a 4.17.”
Have you taken the ACT and/or SAT yet?
“No, sir. I take the SAT on June 2nd and I am taking the ACT in August.”
Good luck with the tests.
“Thank you.”
What is your favorite subject in school?
“Science.”
Do you play any other sports for Rancho?
“Lacrosse.”
What are you doing this summer for fun away from football?
“I am going to the beach, hanging with friends, and working out. Even away from football, I still love to workout.”
Isaac, thanks for your time today and good luck with the upcoming camp.
“Thank you.”
