The Long Beach Poly Jackrabbits were once again a team that was feared on the gridiron during the 2019 season. The historic California football program posted an 8-4 record going against Division 1/2 competition making a two-game run into the post-season with a roster filled with up and coming talent. One of the Jackrabbits’ talents on the squad to watch going forward is Class of 2021 corner/safety Torion White. White was all over the secondary during his junior campaign coming up with 32 tackles, 26 solo, with a pick, six passes broken up, a fumble recovery, and jarred two loose.

In an RNG exclusive interview, I got to ask the important questions about his 2019 campaign with a look to his offseason workouts.

Interview

Torion, how did the 2019 season go for you overall?

“I did well overall, I feel like I could’ve did better by not making the same mistakes twice.”

What base defense did the Jackrabbits run this past season?

“We ran a lot of man this season with our defense. We have a lot of guys that can get the job done and could match anyone one-on-one.”

Which coverages were you executing?

“We ran a lot of man but when we ran zone cover 3, I executed really well.”

Where all did you line up in the scheme and what were your roles?

“I lined up at corner and free safety. I was in man a lot the whole season but when we ran zone and I was at safety, I knew how to read coverages.”

One thing that is undeniable about your play, you put your body on the line soaring for the ball above everyone else or laying out to get a hand on the ball. How did you push your game forward on the field in during your junior year in other areas?

“When I’m on the field I get in my zone get focused and in my head. I think he won’t beat me, he can’t win. I always communicate with the defense so we’re all on the same page.”

Was there a challenge you faced this season on the field, if so, what was that challenge?

“The biggest challenged I faced this year was myself. What I mean by myself is a few missed tackles here and there and looking in the backfield.”

How did you overcome that challenge to become a better player?

“How I overcame that challenge was going against big players during practice and talking to my DB coach about ways to play different situations.”

What do you now consider to be the overall strengths to your game?

“A strength to my game is my football IQ, for sure. Once a coach teaches me or tells me something, I get it down and I know how to adjust to certain situations.”

What offseason goals have you set for yourself?

“This off season I’m trying to get my technique even better and get to 180 pounds before the season.”

Torion, thanks for your time today and good luck with your offseason workouts.

“Thank you.”
