In the day of the Spread offense there is great importance placed on the overall athleticism of the quarterback in the run and pass game to operate the scheme effectively, thus it is never too early to start looking at players who are on track to make an impact as they go deeper into their career. For Class of 2023 quarterback Cory Nichols, he is doing his part to turn heads leaving those in the crowd to wonder how far he can push his individual talents. Through five games against his peer group, he has passed for an estimated 600 yards with 14 touchdowns and covered 450 yards on the ground with three more scores going up on the board. The 5-10, 160-pound, signal caller is receiving additional tutelage from the 21st ranked team in the country working with the Hornets (5-0) varsity twice a week.
With buzz coming out of central Arkansas about Nichols, it was time for a quick interview with the rising talent.
Interview
Cory, over the offseason and going into fall camp with the Hornets, what did you work on to get ready for the season?
“Over the offseason I worked on my footwork, throwing motion, speed, explosiveness, and strength. I worked with JJ Meadors over the spring. He would come up on the weekends working on my throwing motion and footwork.”
As the season gets going, are you getting addition work in with the varsity?
“Yes. On Tuesday and Wednesday mornings I am practicing with the varsity.”
When you work with the varsity squad, what are you doing?
“In the mornings I am doing skill work with the QB coach. We work on my footwork and throwing.”
How have you adapted to the game this season?
“The speed of the game is the same as last year. It has gone well, we are undefeated.”
Which areas of your game are showing the biggest improvement?
“I am throwing way more than last year, that part of my game has improved.”
How are you fine-tuning your game each week?
“Every day I am throwing and working on something in practice.”
What style of offense are you running?
“We run the Spread offense.”
Which routes are you hitting in the passing attack?
“Go-routes, posts, 10-and-out, speed-outs, and shallows.”
What goals have you set for yourself for the season?
“The goal is to go undefeated, have 15 passing touchdowns, 10 rushing touchdowns, and 1,000 passing yards and 1,000 rushing.”
Cory, good luck achieving your goals the rest of the way. Thanks for your time today.
“Thank you.”
