The free safety position at Oaks Christian is ideally schemed for that head hunter/ballhawk who likes to get after it on the field. During the Lions’ five-game 2020 season this spring, Carson Schwesinger (UCLA) had an amazing senior campaign producing 36 tackles, 23 solo, with six interceptions, and three passes broken up while forcing and picking up a fumble. Being groomed to take his spot this fall is Class of 2023 rising talent Cash Vasquez. Vasquez (6-2, 185) is the younger brother of Class of 2019 Utah State signee Jesse Vasquez. The bloodline to the collegiate level is there with interest coming in for Cash from Utah State, UNLV, Boise State, and Air Force.
With a planned breakout junior season ahead this fall, Cash Vasquez stopped by the RNG Lab for a first-look interview.
Interview
Cash, the 2020 season had to be one full of growth for you, especially learning more about the game. What were some of the things you learned that has helped you mentally prepare this offseason for your junior campaign?
Some of the things I have learned is how fast the game goes. Being behind Carson (Schwesinger), he taught me the little things you learn with experience. That has helped me get ready for this season.
What was it that he taught you?
He taught me when we are back there to read the QB in Cover 1 and 3, and how to look at No. 2 receiver. The little things like that with experience that you can pick up off the offense.
Playing free safety in the Lions’ defense, which areas of your game saw the biggest improvements?
The things that grew the most were my aggressiveness. Being out there in a game or in practice and going against our guys, our running backs, that helped my aggressiveness. Also, my football IQ improved. Being at Oaks with the coaches we have, they have helped me be smarter with my decision making.
When the 2021 season gets going where all might we see you on the field?
Mainly playing safety. I am an athlete, so they can put me anywhere. But the main place is at free safety.
With the 2020 season being played this spring, when do the Lions pick back up getting into that spring practice mode preparing for this fall?
We start in mid-June.
What are you doing this offseason to add more strength and power to your game?
Me and my older brother, Jesse, he’s at Utah State, we are working out a lot. I am working on my explosiveness and speed. Everything has slowed down for me on the field and now I can be faster than everyone else.
How are you improving upon your speed and agility?
For my speed and agility, I am doing a lot of hill work to work on that explosives speed. I am also doing track, running the 100, 200, and 4×1.
Did you play 7v7 this spring or will you?
I may play with Premium coming up.
Are there any national camps you’ve been to so far or have coming up?
I have been invited to a Rivals camp. I am thinking about going to that camp.
What about college camps? Are there any on your schedule?
I am looking at a Utah State camp in June. Other colleges that are showing interest, I may go to their camps as well.
Cash, I appreciate your time today. Wishing you success this summer preparing for your junior season.
Yes, sir. Thank you.
