Watching film on Dontavious Carter, there is a projection to the linebacker’s future. True to the position, Carter (6-2, 205) has a feel for the game in the box and likes to hit. After a breakout sophomore campaign with Fellowship Christian (Roswell), college teams are picking up the scouting process on the rising Georgia prospect.
The willingness to initiate contact with the opposition helped Carter put the end to 63 plays last fall. The hardnosed mentality was also helpful in the Paladins’ offensive attack carrying the rock 22 times for 152 yards with one score.
The love for the game is on the defensive side of the ball for Carter.
“I feel like my aggression is a strength, and I am not afraid of contact,” Carter said. “I am good at getting off blocks, I play strong in the hole, and I dominate. If they are coming up in the B gap, I fill that up. My pursuit laterally is a strength. My aggression and ability to fill the hole are my biggest strengths.”
Working in a 4-3 scheme, Carter spoke about his role in the defense, “I am playing middle linebacker but with some of our calls they move me to defensive end. Sometimes I am at end for containment or as a pass rusher.”
Getting extra offseason work in on the track running the 100, 200, 4×1, and 4×2, Carter is committed to upping his burst and speed.
“I am focused mainly on speed,” Carter shared. “Speed and explosion; you can’t go wrong with that. The harder I hit, the better it is. This track season, I am working on my speed.”
Next level teams scouting Carter were listed, “UTEP, Benedict, UAB, and Middle Tennessee – there are a lot of teams talking to me daily.”
The interest is turning into campus invites.
“I went to Benedict’s Junior Day, and I am going to UTEP,” Carter stated.
Carter gave detail to his time with the Tigers under head coach Ron Dickerson Jr.
“It was amazing,” Carter said. “I loved their facilities. Their coaches really seem to care for their players; I like what they are building there.
“The coaches talked to us and explained to us about their program. Then they walked us over to the stadium; we watched their spring practice. I learned about the structure of college football. The visit was insightful.”
There is excitement in the voice when asked about the next stop with the Miners under first-year head coach Scott Walden.
“I am very excited,” Carter shared. “I can’t wait to see their facilities, meet the coaches, and see what it is like to be a player there.”
As camp season heats up, Carter has already competed at You Are Athlete with upcoming stops at the Under Armour in Nashville, Rivals, and UAB.
