As Centennial High School (Burleson, Texas) pushes through their 2023 schedule preparing for the playoffs, a future leader for the Spartans is emerging. Jacob Torres has helped guide the Spartans junior varsity team to a perfect record this fall, further preparing for that next big step as a backup dual threat on Friday nights.
A sample of Torres’ abilities, the gunslinger showed up in the clutch against an undefeated Denton squad passing for 285 yards with two touchdowns while rushing for 70 in a 49-44 win.
“They mainly run under center, but my coaches are switching it up,” Torres said. “We are going to do more in shotgun and push it up field to fit my playing style.”
Making the move from North Crowley High School, Torres has been hard at work getting up to speed with the Spartans.
“Since I transferred, I have focused on getting the plays down and I have worked on building continuity with the players and the coaches,” Torres stated. “I’ve also been working on my speed as a dual threat and my footwork.”
The reps at all levels are further advancing Torres’ talents in the pocket.
“My improvements this season are looking at the defense and seeing the coverage, and being a leader in the huddle,” Torres shared.
Beyond being able to move the chains like a tailback, Torres spoke about his skills in the pocket, “My strengths are being accurate, being on time, and getting the ball where it needs to go no matter where I am at.”
Over the summer Torres camped with Texas Tech, Baylor, and Houston getting on their recruiting board. The Horned Frogs are a possible upcoming game-day visit for Torres.
