The “overnight” successes of the world took years of hard work before that breakthrough moment. At Lebanon High School (Lebanon, TN), Gavin Gregory is laying down the tracks for his future on both sides of the ball. Looking for that extra exposure with an opportunity to up his skill level against national competition, Gregory (6-1, 165) is hitting the 7-on-7 circuit this winter with DGA.
It happens every year, and in every team sport; a young team takes lumps (4-7) and comes back with vengeance the following season. Talking to Gregory, seems like the Blue Devils are preparing an ambush on 6A Tennessee squads.
“We didn’t throw much last season,” Gregory said. “I spent a lot of time at my backup position as a DB. This year, we will be straight. We have a good quarterback coming in; we’ll be good all around. I should have a great year at wide receiver.”
Preparing for the uninitiated, Gregory shared, “I am working on getting open even better, and locking down wide receivers as well.”
The speed to make an impact at the skill positions is there.
“I am doing speed training, and I have track as well,” Gregory stated. “That should benefit me in football as well. I’m running the 100, 200, and 4×1.”
Gregory continued, “My freshman year my PR (personal record) was 11.5, but I had messed up my hip flexor, that slowed me down a little bit; I’m coming back.”
Taking his talents on the road with DGA, Gregory spoke about competing in 7-on-7 tournaments, “It is improving my conditioning – a lot. It will be even easier to play both sides this year.”
Family ties are helping open recruiting doors early for Gregory.
“UT-Marin is showing interest,” Gregory shared. “My dad went there; he has a lot of connections. When I went to an Ohio State camp some schools were talking to me; we’ll see where it goes from there.”
