Year after year Texas produces some of the best talent in the high school ranks ready to set their mark on the collegiate level. With the massive amount of highly skilled players lining rosters across the state, a few slip through the watchful eyes of college coaches from time to time. One slipping past some college scouts in the 2018 recruiting class is Sanger High School all-purpose back Dameon Moser.
Moser had a breakout season in 2016 helping the Indians to a 6-5 record against Texas 4A competition. Posted stats have the 5-11, 170 pound, talent with 998 yards rushing with 12 scores on the ground and 472 receiving yards with four more trips into the end zone. Game tape shows Moser’s breakaway speed, highlighted by his 10.82 in the 100 meters, and his will to gain yards after contact driving through arm tackles. Unlike most speedy ball carriers, Moser does not dance in the hole but takes a north-south approach using great field vision to find the hole to break open one long run after another.
A few college teams have taken a notice to the Sanger area product but surprisingly no in-state programs are showing serious interest – yet. The schools already recruiting Moser includes Tulsa, where he will visit this weekend, and UMass.
In a Recruiting News Guru exclusive interview, I sat down with one of the bigger under the radar prospects in the Lone Star State to get the inside scoop on his junior season along with his recruiting status.
Interview
Dameon, overall, how did the 2016 season go?
“It went pretty good. I thought I had a decent season. I could have done some things better like put my head down more, but I feel like I had a good season.”
Did you know going into the year that you would have the kind of impact for your team during the 2016 season as you did?
“I did not think so. I thought I was going to be second-string.”
What turned for you allowing you to excel on the field?
“I was motivated. I started to realize football is my way to a free education in college.”
How will your role with the Indians change during your senior season?
“Next year I will have a bigger impact by playing more positions. I will be on both sides of the ball this year.”
Which position on defense will you play?
“Safety and some at cornerback.”
Are you excited about the new roles?
“Yes, I’m really excited. I wanted to play defense the last couple of years but the coaches didn’t want me to get hurt so I could only play offense. They are this year. That will help my recruiting.”
How has your game improved over the past two years?
“I’ve gotten faster and stronger since last year. My vision is good. I have been more comfortable with the offense this off-season. I’m learning more.”
What are you working on this off-season?
“I’m trying to put on more weight. I’m listening to my coaches more, they call the shots. They are the ones to tell me which holes to hit. I’m trying to be more coachable. I’m working on hitting the holes harder and seeing the next move to make. I’m being more physical with my running. I get the job done but I want to be more physical in the games.”
You mentioned gaining weight. What is your weight gain goal?
“I want to be around 185 to 190.”
Are you playing 7v7 ball this spring?
“I have a job and a car payment. I don’t think I will get the chance to play 7v7 this year.”
Where are you working?
“At a local restaurant.”
What was the toughest part of the year for you during your junior season?
“Honestly it was a team obstacle. One of our players died in a car accident. One of our rival schools was being rude about it. Everyone’s emotions were all over, for that game specifically. He was a best friend to all of us.”
How did you prepare for each game last season?
“I watched a lot of film on the opponents’ defense. I would pick out the matchups I wanted. I would go towards the weak ones and run away from their best player. I would talk to my coaches to see if there was anything I had missed. I talked about the opponent’s defense and schemes with my coaches a lot.”
Which schools are showing recruiting interest in you?
“There is quite a bit of interest. Tulsa sends letters often. I’m going to their Junior Day this Saturday. UMass – I’m talking to a couple of their coaches. Those are the main ones.”
Do you have any offers yet?
“No, sir. I’m hoping to change that soon.”
What are college coaches telling you they like about your game?
“I have tried to contact as many coaches as I can. Those two colleges reach out to me and said they really liked my film. They want me to come visit, Tulsa especially. Coaches tell me the way I hit the field and don’t dance as much are things they like about my game.”
What exposure camps have you attended so far or plan on attending coming up?
“I competed in the (Dallas) Nike Regional and I’m going to the Rivals Three Stripe and Lone Star Classic Showcase. All of the camps are invite only.”
How did the Nike camp go?
“It went well. My rating was in the 100’s. I did really well in the cat and mouse and made the Top 10 for running backs.”
Which college camps do you plan on attending this summer?
“I would like to attend Howard, Tulsa, and UMass. It all depends on my work schedule and our off-season football schedule.”
What other sports do you play for Sanger?
“Track. I run the 4×1, 4×2, and 100 or 200 depending on the week.”
What is your best 40-yard dash time?
“My best was a 4.4 at school. I ran a laser timed 4.6 at the Nike Opening.”
What is your cumulative GPA?
“3.72
Have you taken the ACT or SAT yet?
“No, not yet. I take the ACT on April 8.”
Last question. Is there a player at the next level that you model your game after?
“I don’t have a similar skillset as him but I really like Leonard Fournette. I look up to him. All of his film is a highlight. He is a really good athlete, an inspiring athlete.”
Dameon, thanks for your time today and good luck with your visit to Tulsa this weekend.
“Thank you.”
