PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – Word is out on Myron Charles, and now the race is on among college football programs trying to land the four-star. Charles (6-6, 270) abused Florida offenses during his sophomore campaign bringing 22 scholarship opportunities his way. Teams worked to get him on campus over the summer break and are now angling to get him in the stands on Saturdays this fall.
Over the summer months, Charles visited Miami, Florida State, UCF, and South Florida. The Hurricanes made an imprint on his recruiting while he was in town.
“The Miami visit was tough,” Charles said. “Their coaches showed a lot of interest. I got to see a lot, got to meet a lot of the players, and I feel like I met the whole staff.”
Knights’ head coach Gus Malzahn made sure to spend time with Charles while he was in Orlando.
“I got to meet a lot of new people, a lot of their recruits, guys that are coming in the same year as me, and I got to talk to their head coach for a few minutes,” Charles shared.
The Seminoles are letting the Port Charlotte High School standout know he is wanted and needed in Tallahassee.
“Coach Odell (Haggins – DT) and I, we talk about two to three times a week, and not just him, the head coach (Mike Norvell), assistant d-line coach – all of them. We talk a lot. Over time, I have set up a good bond with their coaching staff.”
With his recruitment wide open and Georgia showing interest, all the offering programs are in contact. Asked which other schools besides Florida State was giving him that priority feel, Charles replied, “Really all of them. All of my offers.”
Fall visits will allow Charles to expand his recruiting influence outside of the Sunshine State.
“Bama, I will definitely get back to FSU, probably Ohio State, LSU, and wherever else they want me, I guess,” Charles stated.
Taking in the games will be fun, but the trips for Charles are mostly about business.
“I want to see the environment, the vibe, the way the fans are, the way the coaches are, how the players face adversity, and how the coaches face adversity,” Charles said.
When college scouts check out Charles this season, they will see development.
“I’ve been doing a lot of handwork,” Charles shared. “I feel that I was very dominating last season with my bullrush, most teams will be looking for that. This offseason I’ve thrown a few more moves in the bag. My footwork, pad level, my awareness, and reading keys, I’ve been working on things like that.”
On the pass rush moves, Charles added, “The basics, hand swipes, and spin moves; it depends on which position I am at. Every move you can think of, I’ve been working on that this offseason.”
Development continues in the weight room.
“My bench max is 300, my back squat is 500, and my power clean is 280,” Charles said.
