A quarterback in need of a spot under center in 2016 found a home with a program in great need of a do-it all talent. As announced on Friday, former Kentucky Wildcats starting quarterback Patrick Towles is now a team member of Boston College.
If there ever was a team that was truly one-dimensional on the field during the 2015 season that was dominating in that one phase of the game, that team would be Boston College. The Eagles suffered through a 3-9, 0-8 in ACC, season but ended up with the nation’s best defense limiting teams to an average of 254 yards per contest. The heavy-handed defense got no help from the offense. The Eagles were the third worst offense, statistically, in the nation only gaining 276 yards per game.
Head coach Steve Addazio had put together back-to-back 7-win seasons in his first two years in Chestnut Hill but is still missing that offensive playmaker in the pocket that can help win games… enter Towles. Towles started out his redshirt junior season as the Wildcats’ starting quarterback connecting on 183 of 326 pass attempts for 2,148 yards with nine touchdowns tossed against 14 interceptions. Kentucky (5-7) hit a middle of the season five-game losing streak seeing a promising start to another great season go south quickly. Towles was benched in favor of Drew Barker. When the regular season was completed, the 6’5”, 240 pound, quarterback announced he was transferring.
Boston College will get Towles’ services right away transferring in as a graduated senior.
Despite Towles season being limited in 2015, he still outgained all of Boston College’s quarterbacks combined in yards produced. John Fadule led the Eagles with 464 yards on 38 of 73 passing with one touchdown against four interceptions. Sophomore Troy Flutie was second on the team with 382 yards passing on 24 of 49 with a team-high three touchdowns against one pick.
Towles even outgained the Eagles’ rushing total for the season, 2,148 yards verses 1,973.
Addazio has benefitted from graduated SEC quarterbacks previously taking in Tyler Murphy for the 2014 season. Murphy had a solid season passing for 1,623 yards with 13 touchdowns against 10 interceptions but was an effective chain mover on the ground rushing for 1,184 yards with 11 additional scores.
