On the snap – pop, stop, and rip. That is an easy description of Seth Shuler’s game in the pocket. The 2027 gunslinger has been developing his game all season at the freshman level but is looking for that late season varsity call up with Tivy High School (Kerrville, Texas). The action is bringing attention from next level scouts.
The Lone Star State has a knack for producing fantastic collegiate gunslingers, and Shuler (6-2, 200) is working to keep that theme alive. Competing against his peer group, Shuler has thrown for 1,750 yards hitting 101 of 170 attempts with 24 scores posted on the big board in seven games played.
“The season is going well,” Shuler said. “I’ve put up good numbers, I am looking to get moved up with varsity. I’ve had conversations with my varsity coach. He is looking at pulling me up. Being pulled up for the playoffs is a definite. Hopefully I will get a few of the games towards the end of the season with the varsity.
“My freshman season has been smooth. I feel that I am taking the steps and building up to the varsity level, which is my ultimate goal. I am going through all my reads, going through my progressions, hitting the routes I need to hit, and spreading the ball around nicely. I am putting it where it needs go and getting the job done.”
Shuler covered the Antlers’ offensive attack.
“We run a Spread style offense,” Shuler stated. “We air it out; we have an air attack. We are probably 60 percent pass, maybe a little higher. We like to air it out. We run trips, quads, doubles – we air it out.”
Opposing defenses haven’t had much of a chance lining up against Shuler and company.
“We are looking at 3-4 and 4-3 base defenses with Cover 2 and 4,” Shuler shared. “Defenses have been running base stuff. The other schools are teaching base defenses. There has been some man coverage, Cover 1 some, but a base in the box.”
Every time on the field is a chance to get better.
“I’ve been working on getting the ball out of my hands before the receiver is breaking,” Shuler said. “That will be a big thing and a key thing on varsity. I have been focusing on throwing my read open and not waiting on him to get open. If I don’t see it, I wasn’t pulling it down and running, but now if I don’t see anything I am forcing myself to pull it and run.”
Shuler continued, “The biggest improvements is getting the ball out of my hand. Towards the end of the season, as it went on, as we put more plays in, I am progressing well at getting the ball out. That is helping my receivers. As soon as they cut, the ball is there. They are getting more yards after the catch as a result.
“I have noticed, after forcing myself to pull the ball down, I am doing it more, I am making plays. Nothing crazy like 60 yards to the house, but if we need a first down on 3rd and five, I can make it happen.”
Working at college camps over the summer has helped put Shuler on recruiting boards early.
“Baylor, North Texas, and my QB coach (Yale Vannoy) has sent my film to Nebraska and Miami,” Shuler said. “Miami wants me to come down this summer. They want me at their camp, and they want to see varsity tape. Nebraska likes my size and what they see, but they want to see varsity tape as well.”
Shuler added, “Baylor has been hot on me since my seventh-grade year. I have a good relationship with their QB coach.”
Tivy (6-2) has regular season games remaining against Veterans Memorial and Lockhart.
