The two-day QB Retreat Camp held in Santa Monica, California, (May 29-30) was loaded with top collegiate and high school football players turning into a who’s who of the game at their respective levels. The arm talents from both classifications are already household names or are soon to be.
Out of the high school ranks, the No. 1 rated QB in the nation, Southlake Carroll’s Quinn Ewers who is committed to Ohio State, and the No. 7 ranked Maalik Murphy, out of Junipero Serra committed to Texas, and the No. 8 ranked gunslinger AJ Duffy, a Florida State commit slinging it for IMG Academy, caught the “ohs” and “ahs” from fellow campers and onlookers. But the highlight for many was seeing several college players who will receive early Heisman Trophy consideration ahead of the 2021 season.
Perhaps the only preseason All-American candidates and Heisman hopefuls not at the camp were Oklahoma’s Spencer Rattler and Georgia’s JT Daniels. What the camp did have was Clemson Tigers starter DJ Uiagalelei, Alabama starter Bryce Young, North Carolina’s Sam Howell, Miami’s D’Eriq King, and USC’s Kedon Slovis. Another top arm mentoring the younger kids was the SEC’s returning pass leader Matt Corral (Ole Miss). Out of the Mountain West, the camp had two of the conference’s top performers in San Jose State’s Nick Starkel and Boise State’s Hank Bachmeier.
