A field general who can motivate his team and has a Saturday arm to make the plays, that’s the quick evaluation of Terry “Trey” Hedden (6-3, 210). During his junior season, Hedden led Tampa Catholic to a 9-2 record taking on Florida 2M competition. Offers from South Florida, Florida A&M, and Toledo are in the backpack with college coaches from all over taking a deeper look at the 2024 prospect.

Hedden spoke about his leadership style on the gridiron, “I love to rally the guys. We had three comeback wins last season; all were late in the fourth quarter. I am effectively vocal and loud, and I am not afraid to get on people, and I take on my mistakes. I am not afraid to call out guys to pick it up.”

The Crusaders’ offense is multidimensional allowing Hedden to showcase all his talents.

“We are entirely pro style, and do a little bit of everything,” Hedden said. “We run some spread, some under center with play action, and some RPOs (run-pass option). Top to bottom, we are able to get into anything depending on the team we are playing.”

Hedden continued covering his skills on the field as a quarterback, “For me, I feel that I read a defense as well as anyone and I can make all the throws. I am becoming more of an athlete every time I hit the field.”

Because of his ability to pick apart a defense, more college scouts are checking in on the three-star.

“Louisville, Harvard, Dartmouth, Yale, Princeton, UMass, I am visiting them on Tuesday, Appalachian State, Northern Illinois, and Mercer; that’s just who I talked to today. Those are the teams off the top of my head that are showing interest.”

The Tampa Catholic sidelines during spring practice will be filled with college coaches scouting Hedden.

“In addition to the schools I just mentioned, my head coach let me know the offensive coordinator for Northwestern is coming down, but I have not talked to him directly. I am not 100 percent sure where their interest is right now.”

The heavy interest is getting Hedden on college campuses.

“Last Thursday I went to Toledo, that was a great visit,” Hedden shared. “I was there for nine hours. I flew back for Easter and now I am back on the road. On Monday, I was at Harvard and Dartmouth, UMass is today, and on Wednesday I will be at Louisville. I will be at USF on Friday.”

Hedden previewed the upcoming visits.

Louisville: “Louisville is a Power Five school showing heavy interest. I talked to some of their coaches daily; I am excited to get there. Louisville has a winning culture, the Brohms (Jeff and Brian) are there; two very good quarterbacks. It is cool the brothers are the head coach and the offensive coordinator/quarterback coach. I think Louisville brings a lot to the table.”

South Florida: “They were my first offer when I was a freshman, and even with coaching chances they continue to recruit me. USF is home; it is not far from home. When I saw coach (Alex) Golesh was hired, I was very excited. They can do a lot in their offense. They will throw the ball a lot, extend the field and spread them out. Their offense is built on big plays.”

Hedden is in no hurry with his process recognizing how important the spring evaluation period will be for his recruitment.

“I feel like recruiting is a day-to-day process,” Hedden shared. “Some are hard you on one day and then not as hard on you the next. This summer I will take some officials. When I take officials, it will be to schools who are in the running. I’m not taking meaningless official visits. It’ll be to whoever is interested at that point.”

BEYOND THE INTERVIEW

Hedden is ready for the Crusaders to gel this spring with goals set for the fall months.

“I am super excited for spring practice,” Hedden said. “We are bringing in talent. I am ready to set all the passing records at Tampa Catholic.”

Off the field, Hedden is getting it done in the classroom carrying a 4.31 GPA with a 25 scored on the ACT and a 1250 on the SAT.
