There were a lot of reasons for football fans and college coaches to head to a Rancho Santa Margarita Catholic High School game during the 2015 season. The 2016 class included quarterback K.J. Costello (Stanford), wide receiver Dylan Crawford, (Michigan), linebacker Tanner Matthews (Navy), kicker Sam Loy (Vanderbilt), and defensive end Alec Stewart (Wyoming). The 2017 class is loaded as well giving fans and college coaches another reason to head to the California high school gridirons in 2016.
The Eagles lost a lot of talent but return budding talent in defensive back Darian Fernandez, quarterback Richard Wagner along with a pair of 4-star recruits in tight end/receiver Grant Calcaterra and offensive lineman Brett Neilon. Calcaterra has already committed to Oklahoma but the next level frenzy to land Neilon is still going strong.
Neilon (6-2, 285) worked his way into being one of the more highly prized recruits in the 2017 class knocking opposing defensive lineman and linebackers on their backside playing guard for the Eagles last season. College coaches can use him on the interior at either guard spot or at center at the next level and center is just where he may play during the 2016 campaign along with defensive tackle.
Among the 18 schools to drop offers on the table for Neilon includes Cal, South Carolina, Utah, Vanderbilt, Harvard, Washington, North Carolina, Arizona State, Boston College, Duke, USC, Arizona, and UCLA. In a Recruiting News Guru exclusive interview, I caught up with the Rancho Santa Margarita area talent during an unofficial visit to UCLA to take in a Bruins practice to find out how his offseason is going and received a recruiting news update.
