Recruiting offers picking up for Darius Fullwood as his announcement date approaches
Life is not slowing down for Maryland defensive end Darius Fullwood, and why would it? Considered one of the top recruits for the 2015 class with a personally set announcement date of June 28th looming overhead, camps, unofficially visits and offers keep coming around every corner in the offseason for the talented big man.
At 6’4”, 240 pounds, the Our Lady of Good Counsel star has his pick of top programs throughout the region but each day brings the possibility of another offer after completing more unofficial visits or after attending yet another college day camp.
Catching up with Fullwood at the Louisville International Airport after unofficially visiting Kentucky, the highly sought after recruit answered recruiting questions as his announcement date closes.
What schools are recruiting you right now?
“Virginia Tech, Miami, NC State, Maryland, Wake Forest, Florida State, Rutgers, Penn State, Michigan State, Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio State, Boston College, Albany, Navy, Old Dominion, James Madision, and West Virginia… I think that’s all of them.”
Fullwood unintentionally left off reported offers from Alabama and Iowa among others.
What type of feedback have you received from these colleges?
“They love that I’m a great pass rusher. Each coach believes I can be an impact player for their school.
Any negative feedback, or tips on how to improve your game or technique?
“No negatives from the coaches so far.”
Who are your top five programs who have offered you as of now and why?
“Virginia Tech, Miami, Georgia Tech, Ohio State, and Kentucky are my top five. I like Virginia Tech’s family atmosphere. I know a few people going there or who are already there (DB Kendall Fuller). They are also recruiting other guys at my school.
Fullwood continues, “Miami has a great campus. Coach (Jethro) Franklin is a great defensive line coach. I know he can develop me well into a better player. You can never go wrong with the U. Georgia Tech is similar to V-Tech, I know a lot of people down there, some from my school. I feel at home feel down there.”
“Kentucky has a great combination of everything. Kolbie Walker (linebacker 2014) is down here right now. They play great football in the SEC and Kentucky is on the way up. They had a great 2014 recruiting class, something I like a lot. Playing at Kentucky I know I will play against good talent every week. I feel the same about Ohio State as Kentucky, great games every week. Playing good teams like Michigan and Michigan State. It seems like a good fit too.”
Any schools making a hard run at you as your announcement date gets closer?
“Maryland, Rutgers, and Boston College offered recently.”
Are there any schools that haven’t offered you yet that you would like to get an offer from?
“Duke and North Carolina. Wake Forest has offered me, I like that area down there.”
Any chance you may delay your decision?
“I’m thinking about doing that but I think I’m going to stay with the decision date. I’m going to talk to my parents and make a decision once all the camps are finished.”
What college camps will you attend this summer?
“Duke on Friday, Ohio State on June 19, and an unofficial visit to V-Tech on Saturday.”
What other college camps have you attended thus far?
“I went to Maryland and Rutgers last week on Sunday and Saturday.”
How did you perform at the camps?
“It went well. I like going to camps, they allow me to continue to compete. I get to show my game and hone my game. I get to work on my craft.”
How was your unofficial visit to Kentucky?
“It was good. I’ve been down here several times. My mom went for first time. I’m good friends with a lot of the 2014 players.”
What did your mom think about her visit to the Kentucky campus?
“She loves it down here.”
Where will you make your announce?
“I’ll either announce at my house or a place around my house, the place where I played youth football. I’d like to do it on the field there. Still not sure yet where I will do it.”
With Fullwood’s announcement date nearing, his recruiting is heating up. The powerful defensive end is making the rounds picking up new offers leading to a fluid Top Five that could change at any moment. Time will tell which lucky program has their name called on June 28.
