Red Team tops White Team 62-18 in Arkansas Spring Game
Arkansas Razorbacks head coach Bret Bielema set up the Hogs’ Spring Game as “Ones Verses the World” on Saturday and then watched as his first team offense and defense dominated throughout in a 62-18 Red Team win over the White Team.
Arkansas senior quarterback Brandon Allen was sharp completing 17 of 21 passes for 230 yards, all in the first half. Allen had a drop on the opening play of the game by wide receiver Jared Cornelius but got back on track with tight ends Hunter Henry and Jeremy Sprinkle. Allen finished with a four yard touchdown pass to Sprinkle along with a 14 and 65 yard scores with receiver Keon Hatcher. Hatcher redeemed himself for dropping a touchdown earlier in the scrimmage.
Without 1,000 yard rushers Jonathan Williams and Alex Collins suiting up for the game, Kody Walker was given the start turning in an 174 yard rushing performance on 26 carries with runs of 25, 2, and 1 yard.
Second string quarterback Austin Allen looked more the part of a SEC quarterback huddling up with the Red Team in the second half than the White Team in the first half. In the second half Brandon Allen’s younger brother connected on 6 of 7 passes for 43 yards and a touchdown. In the first half he picked up 14 yards through the air only completing 3 of 6 passes.
Arkansas’ starting defense was solid playing against the second and third teamers only allowing one first down and a total of 44 yards of offense. The White Team scored their points on field goals as part of a shootout at the end of the second and fourth quarter. Lane Saling hit on 6 of 8 attempts and Adam McFain connected on 5 of 8.
Bielema kept the offense vanilla only running 50 percent of the team’s playbook during the scrimmage. Most of the action was up the middle handoffs, off tackle right or left, and bootleg passes to the tight ends.
