The Will Muschamp era at South Carolina has successfully taken off but has suffered a couple of setbacks over the spring especially on offense. Reports coming from The State have the Gamecocks losing their second quarterback in spring practices when Perry Orth suffered a broken collarbone after Saturday’s scrimmage.
The Gamecocks suffered setback after setback during the 2015 season under center starting out with Connor Mitch but then used Orth and Lorenzo Nunez through a tough 3-9, 1-7, season. Mitch started two games, Nunez started two, and Orth started eight. Orth led USC with 1,929 yards passing connecting on 12 touchdown passes but threw nine interceptions on 261 pass attempts.
South Carolina offensive coordinator Kurt Roper is going through his first on-field practices with his quarterbacks trying to find a leader going into the 2016 season. Five quarterbacks have been battling, Orth, Mitch, Nunez, freshman Brandon McIlwain, and sophomore Michael Scarnecchia. Nunez suffered what is being described as a “not serious” hyperextended knee injury by Muschamp last week.
The State reported on Orth’s injury timeline giving a June return for team activities.
